Utopia, the sales and distribution company, has acquired the North American rights to Gio Arlotta’s feature documentary We Intend to Cause Havoc and has set a July 13th release on AppleTV and Altavod.
Directed by Gio Arlotta and written and produced by Arlotta and Tim Spreng, the film highlights WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc), Zambia’s most popular rock band of the 1970s led by the powerful vocalist, Jagari, whose name is an Africanisation of ‘Mick Jagger’. Through the resurrection of music that was forgotten by many and unheard by most, the film explores the life of a former African rockstar and the excitement around the rediscovery of his music by a new generation of western fans.
Gio Arlotta and musician Jacco Gardner travel through Zambia alongside Jagari to chart his past as a rock icon. The documentary also captures the influence that the Anglo American Heavy Psychedelic Rock of the 70s had on popular Zambian bands. Their voyage leads to the reunion of WITCH and their first-ever European tour.
Director Gio Arlotta says: “Apart from learning more about a beautiful country, its people and its music, what I’d like for the audience to take away is the inspiration to get up and follow their dreams because you can never know when they will come true.”
Danielle DiGiacomo, Head of Content for Utopia, says: “Utopia’s team found Arlotta’s deep dive into the rock and roll rhythms of WITCH engrossing and unifying. The film, which follows a revival for the band, symbolizes music’s ability to carve a communal space across distance and difference, a welcome reminder after what has been an isolating year for many.”
We Intend to Cause Havoc is a Clam Jam Productions film in association with Pantheon Pictures.
