In Camera is an evocative and formally daring debut feature by writer-director Naqqash Khalid, exploring the struggles of Aden, a young British Asian actor caught in a relentless cycle of nightmarish auditions. Played by Nabhaan Rizwan (Industry, Station 11, The Informer), Aden’s journey sheds light on the film industry’s prejudices and societal hypocrisies. After enduring repeated rejections, Aden takes matters into his own hands, determined to redefine his narrative and find a role that fits.
This striking production stars Rizwan, previously named a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2019, alongside BAFTA-winning Amir El-Masry (Limbo), who earned the same recognition in 2021. Khalid himself was named a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2020, completing a trio of exceptional talents whose work challenges conventions and amplifies underrepresented voices.
Produced by BAFTA-winning Mary Burke (Public Dreams) and Juliette Larthe (Pure Phase Films Ltd), In Camera is the first feature developed by Pure Phase and the UK arm of Prettybird, a global creative studio known for pushing the boundaries of storytelling. The film was financed by BBC Film and the BFI (with National Lottery funding), with additional support from Uncommon Creative Studio.
Naqqash Khalid’s debut as writer-director is fiercely charged, tackling themes of identity and resilience with a fresh and uncompromising lens. Juliette Larthe, a multiplatform creative producer, brings her expertise across short form, documentary, and scripted projects to the project. Mary Burke, known for her BAFTA-winning work, adds her seasoned production experience.
Pure Phase Films Ltd is a burgeoning film and TV development and production company, while Prettybird is a modern creative studio, celebrated for fostering a global community of storytellers and creators who innovate in filmmaking and moving image.
Formally playful and deeply resonant, In Camera is more than a film about one actor’s struggle—it’s a commentary on the systemic barriers faced by marginalized voices in the entertainment industry. With its bold narrative and powerhouse team, it promises to be a standout debut that not only entertains but also sparks important conversations about representation and inclusion in film.
The film is available on U.S. VOD platforms from April 29, 2025
