Ahz Moses is a multifaceted creative. The singer, songwriter, and producer, based in Houston, TX was raised in North Carolina and credits Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo, Outkast, and Cee Lo Green for his creative leanings. Art was always a constant, throughout both his childhood and young adult years. We had the opportunity to speak about his career and aspirations.
Thank you for agreeing to catch up with Occhi Magazine. Congratulations on your career to date. For readers who are unfamiliar with you, how did you get into music?
I grew up in a fairly musical family. My father was a part of my family-based gospel group, and when I got old enough I started playing keyboard for them. I have always sang since I was a little boy or tried to. Our church community had a LOT of musical events and elements that directly impacted my interest.
Who are your biggest influences?
Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo, and CeeLo are my biggest influences as artists.
Artists often talk about suffering from creative block. What do you turn to in order to keep motivated, inspired, or sustain a level of creativity?
I don’t force. If it’s not there, you have to allow it to come. So I usually will redirect my energy to something else non-music related, and circle back.
As an artist, how do you select material, and do you apply a particular methodology to develop a track?
Sometimes I build from an idea. Most times it starts with a couple tracks in a session. I’ll pick two or three cool tracks, and then bounce back in forth between tracks.
We love your latest project ‘Expressions’. Please tell us more about its origins and how you came to produce it?
I released it in 2020, so that year in the US was a LOT of social focus as far as race, orientation, and politics. I wanted to capture that energy and release something specifically reflective of that time.
We love the animated video. Please tell us more about its production.
The video is to the single from that project, “Love Some”. It was directed by TeaRon Watkins. He’d previously done Macy Gray and a couple other animated videos; and I felt it would be appropriate to capture the message of “Love Some”, with a cartoon. We put our heads together and now you have what is the video.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m preparing to release a new EP this year in 2022. Hopefully two of them. Right now, it is still untitled. But you can expect some veeeeery fresh material from Ahz Moses.
Where can our readers find out more about you and your projects?
I’m on all social media @Ahzmoses and all music streaming platforms. Check out both projects: “Frequency Music” and “Expressions”.
