Demae is a London-based multi-disciplinary artist known for her unique blend of soul, alternative hip-hop, and contemporary R&B. With a keen ear for eclectic sounds and a talent for introspective storytelling, she has quickly gained recognition as one of the UK’s most promising new artists. Studying fashion at university, Demae never planned to formalise music, but would always experiment with it in her own time. “I would come home and sing, not really knowing I could just do it for fun,” she says. But after a friend found her demos, secretly sending them to her friendship group when they were 17, they inadvertently formalized the transition from Demae’s passion, into craft. “I loved fusing different worlds together. Singing a Minnie Ripperton ‘Inside My Love’ over a MNDSGN beat for example,” she says of her recordings at the time.
Following the success of her debut project Life Works Out…Usually, Demae continues to push the boundaries of her craft with her latest release, the Deliver Me EP, featuring the hit singles “Speechless” and “Go Ur Own Way.” Currently supporting Jorja Smith on tour, Demae is poised to make an even greater impact on the music scene.
Deliver Me is the artist’s collaboration with several collaborators such as Devin Morrison, Ahwlee, Rog, MNDSGN, Aaron Paris, and 3x GRAMMY Award-winning producer Beat Butcha. It is a deeply personal collection of tracks that explore the complexities of love and self-awareness. The EP opens with the previously released single “Speechless,” a jazz-infused track that captures the enchanting, almost hypnotic power of love. Demae explains, “I wanted to be as imaginative as possible here, to really display how love makes you feel.” This is followed by “Go Ur Own Way,” another single that has already resonated with fans for its quieter, more introspective tone. The track sees Demae navigating the delicate balance between heart and mind, urging herself—and her listeners—to forge their own paths.
The EP’s most recent release “Bloody Bouquets” is accompanied by a visual directed by Ivor Adamah-Lawson. Speaking on the video, Ivor Adamah-Lawson shares, “After listening to ‘Bloody Bouquets’ I found that at the center of the song for me was a tension, a push and pull. So in that same notion, I wanted to create a similar environment on set to aid that feeling and that was one of the main reasons for shooting on film. And we shot on the hairline. The majority of the shots were done in one take only. This visual is rough around the edges, honest, and very raw. It was important for us to work in this way because like the themes of love in the song, being present and being there is far more invaluable than any extracurricular glamour. We even had the honor of Kudii creating a work for Demae, after an open dialogue they had around the EP itself and everything else. It anchors the mood of the visual and so much more.”
