Vasilikí was born and raised in Athens, Greece. She moved to New York City at aged nineteen to pursue a career in the performing arts. During this time, she has honed her signature retro sound while developing an artistic persona inspired by an eccentric, vintage aesthetic. Her fascination with art, music, and fashion from the 1920s to the late 1980s has greatly influenced her style. In addition to graduating from acting school and studying dance in Greece, she infuses her music with her own choreographic and creative direction ideas. Vasilikí places a lot of importance on the visual aspect of her music as it reflects the initial inspiration behind the music just as much as the music itself does.
She has recently released her latest track “Harley Queen”. When discussing the track, she mentioned that she wrote it early in 2021 in New York. She was sitting in her bedroom in Washington Heights, playing around with melodies, and soon found herself halfway through the song without realizing it. She felt that many unexpressed emotions found their way onto the paper that night. After sharing her ideas with her favorite producer, Stavros, they worked on it for a long time. However, it wasn’t until she recorded the operatic harmonies that the song began to make sense to her. It was as if it started living in a world of its own, which was her goal. “Harley Queen” talks about a girl with big dreams and alluring confidence, much like Harley Quinn. She meets someone whose inner world fascinates her so much that she opens up like never before, only to end up heartbroken. The song conveys the idea that sometimes we discover parts of ourselves in other people, which can be why we fall in love. We often keep our vulnerable sides hidden behind a mask until someone takes it off for us. We then surrender to that person with our hopes and dreams, experiencing love in the most intense manner, which can be as freeing as it is terrifying. “Harley Queen” is special to her as it paved the way for all the music that would come next, essentially giving birth to her first musical era.
Describing the official video, she shares, “My friend from acting school, Josh Gillis came to film a theater show another dear friend of mine wrote and directed, in which I was performing – at Under St Marks Theater. I told him I was looking for someone to film the music video for my next song and we decided to collaborate. I put on my rollerblades and my five dollar gown and the two of us went to a few different locations in New York and shot the whole thing in one day. I had most of the ideas planned in my head beforehand but it was interesting that all the shots in the alleyway happened by accident.”
