Born in Sydney, Australia, and spending most of her life surrounded by music, Jane Irving discovered jazz in her late teens. Initially, as a classical piano student, the combination of studying and having a natural feel for jazz, nurtured her understanding of the voice as an instrument for pure self-expression. In 2011, Jane moved to New York with her husband, bassist Kevin Hailey. Since then, she has garnered a devoted following of fans, appearing at venues in and around the city such as Birdland Jazz Club, Minton’s, Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, and Mezzrow.
Her new project, titled ‘Don’t Quit Now’ is set to drop in early 2023. Discussing the project, she shares ‘‘The album was recorded after a 15-month gig hiatus in NYC post-COVID. It was a recording that had been scheduled right before COVID hit. As a performing artist of some 30 years, I am now in a deeper, more discerning place. I was always a risk taker on stage and this recording is a new risk for me. One of vulnerability and spaciousness. I think this is an accessible collection that I hope will reach both jazz vocal devotees and new listeners to the genre. This is an invitation to an interactive place where songs are delivered with taste and control and have the immediacy and freshness of a band playing in a room. These songs are sophisticated and strong, all with a beautiful story. They represent some of my feelings living through the aches and pains of COVID, the uncertainty of the future, and the places I found solace and love.”
