Ted Rosenthal, one of the most celebrated jazz pianists and composers of his generation, is about to unveil an extraordinary new project, “High Standards,” the first of four captivating albums set to be released over the next year. Known for his dynamic performances worldwide and his collaborations with jazz legends like Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, and Phil Woods, Rosenthal continues to push boundaries with his artistry.
“High Standards” is the debut release from Trio in 4 Acts (TMR Music), a groundbreaking series featuring Ted on piano, with Martin Wind and Noriko Ueda alternating on bass, and Tim Horner and Quincy Davis sharing drum duties. Recorded during the summer of 2024, this collection showcases Rosenthal’s passion for transforming beloved standards into fresh, imaginative arrangements that embody the true spirit of jazz improvisation.
From timeless classics like Lover Man and Skylark to evocative pairings like Everything Happens to Me and It Could Happen to You, Rosenthal breathes new life into these cherished pieces. He also ventures into less-explored territory with Broadway gems such as Jet Song, Old Devil Moon, To Life, and One, infusing them with rhythmic surprises that keep listeners on their toes. The album concludes with The Cup Bearers, a jazz standard inspired by Rosenthal’s piano heroes, making for a thrilling finale.
Speaking about the project, Rosenthal shares, “‘High Standards’ is a reflection of my love for taking familiar music and discovering fresh, creative ways to present it. The mix of the familiar with the unexpected is a perfect match for the improvisational spirit of jazz.” He adds, “I’m incredibly grateful to my trio partners—Martin, Noriko, Tim, and Quincy—who bring sensitivity, virtuosity, and an undeniable swing to this music. They’re simply phenomenal collaborators.”
This album is set to be released on March 21, 2025. Whether you are a long-time jazz listener or new to the genre, “High Standards” offers a unique listening experience. Take some time to explore the artistry of Ted Rosenthal and his trios.
