Jenn Singer is pleased to present Anne Austin Pearce: Elements, an online solo exhibition of new works on paper by American artist Anne Austin Pearce.
In cathartic response to the isolation of the indoors juxtaposed by time spent in solitude exploring the outdoors during the pandemic, Anne Austin Pearce’s newest works are translations of the collision of the self and the natural world, an exploration of the intersection between seen and unseen, the shifting edges of ocean and the vastness of the ocean itself.
The sense memory of the experience of nature connects us to Anne Austin Pearce’s Elements in swirling, bursting spontaneous movements – a satisfying interplay between her inks and acrylics. Abstract rivers and inlets dance along the paper in some works while bolder layers build within others, revealing random yet perfect natural patterns suggesting animals or sea creatures hiding beneath.
Born in Lawrence, Kansas, the artist currently lives and works in Laguna Beach, CA. Having just relocated to California before the pandemic hit, Anne Austin Pearce had a fresh landscape to explore when daily walks in solitude became the only way to break the monotony of lockdown indoors.
She states, “When walking early in the morning by the Pacific Ocean it is possible to be almost entirely alone. This act of walking in nature, across the earth, in warm light allows me to feel as if I have gained special access to the greatest portal on offer. My mind recognizes the senses I possess are all turned all the way up, consuming what this moment possesses and I am collecting/storing/packing in as much of it as possible. California remains brand new, making these collection expeditions shiny and exciting. Navigation of the unknown, the futureless view leaves the immediacy of the moment. The moment swells in size, it is a habitat for my imagination and storage for the passes through the natural world I make on a daily basis.”
In Elements, each piece is tethered by place with a specific visual language. As a human is transformed by each new experience, so are the paintings made at or inspired by unique geographical locations. They are now intermingled and representative of specific moments in time and space, interwoven and contextualized. They now belong to these new works and a relaxed flow between them emerges.
The exhibition has been online since November 17th and runs until December 30, 2020. For further information, please visit jennsingergallery.com
