Jennifer Sharp’s UNA GREAT FILM screens at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival ahead of a Netflix premiere later this year.   As a screenwriter engages with Hollywood executives, her beautiful diverse movie about a black American woman traveling to Mexico slowly becomes a romantic comedy with an all-white cast.

The movie introduces new perspectives on common stereotypes. It is a heartwarming and intelligent movie that rightly portrays Mexicans and black people as well-rounded humans rather than marginalized stereotypes. It successfully delivers its message, following the mold of Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle, imaginatively using comedy to expose relevant contemporary and controversial issues. It is entertaining, thought-provoking and provides a much-welcomed dimension to filmmaking by casting professional thespians with local Mexican non-actors.  UNA GREAT FILM screens this Valentine’s at 4:05 pm and Thursday, February 20 at 9:15 pm at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival

The Pan African Film & Arts Festival’s goal is to present and showcase the broad spectrum of black creative works, particularly those that reinforce positive images and help destroy negative stereotypes. The festival believes film and art can lead to better understanding and foster communication between peoples of diverse cultures, races, and lifestyles, while at the same time serve as a vehicle to initiate dialogue on the important issues of our times.

Established in 1992, The Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the promotion of cultural understanding among peoples of African descent. PAFF is dedicated to racial tolerance through the exhibition of film, art, and creative expression. The festival runs from February 11-23 2020.
