The whodunit creature feature, ‘Beast Within’ is introduced by the narration of the main character August, played by Steven Morana. Morana, who co-directs with Chris Green, plays the lead programmer for the gaming app “Werewolves Awaken”, an immersive online horror adapted from a role-playing card game. The film is set at the launch party of game creator Brian, a flamboyant womanizer of questionable integrity.
Unfortunately for the guests, as dead bodies are discovered one by one, they realize the game is being played out in real-time and they’re all prey for the killer. As tensions mount, accusations are hurled around in the process of revealing secrets among the survivors. Ultimately, it is left to August and his love interest Cheyenne, played by Holly Deveaux, to try and bring order to the chaos.
Beast Within is not a cult blockbuster but is watchable and contains the typical horror elements of gore and a villain-monster beyond control. In addition to the overall pace of the film, the action and dialogue of certain characters lacked continuity in places, resulting in some performances coming across forced. Beast Within will not set your heart racing with fear but it is an indie film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Set to Hip Hop soundtrack by Arya Safakish, it also stars actors Colm Feore (Thor) and Art Hindle (Invasion of the Body Snatchers).
