Vancouver-based writer/director Dr. Jules Arita Koostachin will attend the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto for the World Premiere of her feature film Broken Angel on October 20th, 2022. From there, the film travels to the American Indian Film Festival (AIFF) and back to BC for its Western Canadian premiere at the Whistler Film Festival (WFF) where it is eligible for WFF’s coveted Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature.
The dramatic thriller features an incredible cast of Indigenous talent including Sera-Lys McArthur (Outlander, Monkey Beach), Asivak Koostachin (Run Woman Run, Letterkenny), and Brooklyn Letexier-Hart (Night Raiders, Burden of Truth).
This BC production follows Angel, mother to Tanis, who escapes into the night from her abusive partner Earl (Carlo Marks) to a women’s shelter on the reservation. As the prospect of a new beginning comes to light, he tracks her down and she is forced to flee or fight.
Broken Angel includes both English and Cree dialogue and is written, stars, directed, and produced by Dr. Jules Arita Koostachin (AskiBOYZ). The film is executive produced and co-produced by Patti Poskitt (Monkey Beach) and Anne Wheeler (Firefly Lane). The film’s composer is Wayne Lavallee (Red Snow) and Sarah Thomas Moffat (Frankie Drake Mysteries) is the director of photography. Broken Angel was selected by the Toronto International Film Festival Filmmakers Lab in 2018 and the Whistler Screenwriting Lab in 2019.
