The London Brew journey began as a vision for a live performance at the Barbican to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’s landmark album Bitches Brew in early 2020. Things took a turn when live performances were hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, producer and guitarist Martin Terefe and executive producer Bruce Lampcov facilitated a recording session instead, bringing together an impressive lineup of some of the most innovative contemporary musicians. This recording session captured a monumental body of work, driven by spontaneity, vigor, and unity, inspired by and rooted in Miles Davis’s groundbreaking masterpiece.
This November, as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, the creators of this initiative assemble with guest artists for a fresh, spontaneous new chapter. The first-ever live performance of London Brew will take place at the Barbican on Saturday 18 November at 19:30. The London Brew performance will be accompanied by live projection art under the artistic direction of London artist Toby Laurent Belson, who created the original album artwork.
Mercury Prize nominated artists Nubya Garcia, and composer/ producer ESKA form part of the on-stage incarnation of London Brew, joining the talents of Nikolaj Torp Larsen, Nick Ramm, Saleem Raman, Robert Stillman, Dave Okumu, Dan See, Tom Herbert and Raven Bush.
Executive Producer Bruce Lampcov, is a producer and engineer who has worked with Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, and Eurythmics. Lampcov explains “Three years ago a concert at the Barbican inspired by the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew was canceled because of the global pandemic. Out of that disappointment emerged the extraordinary recording London Brew and I am so thrilled that finally we are going to experience it live!”
