Born in Catanzaro, Italy, where he lives and works, Claudio Parentela is an illustrator, painter, photographer, cartoonist, collagist, and a freelance journalist.
You work in different areas in art, such as illustration, painting, and a cartoonist. Do you have a favorite one?
Currently, I’m in love with photography, but I like to experiment with everything that happens to me – that I find. I transform what I photograph. I photograph my collages. I make collages with my photos. I often photograph my installations. I draw my photos. I tie them; I knotted them. I never know what I’ll do. I leave everything to chance, and to my mood and curiosity. Additionally, I like to explore new worlds and techniques. I can’t settle on one color or on a particular a technique. I love to continuously experiment, using what I have access to.
How would you describe your illustration style?
My art is anarchic, cool, conceptual, twisted, schizophrenic, obsessive, and chaotic.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m preparing three shows, and I’m working on my next three tarot decks. Also, some t-shirts, posters, bags, shoes, my interviews, much more. I’m also working on two videos.
Can you share your process on creating art?
Oh, it’s very fast and free – almost automatic – good music, a good beer, my cigarettes, and my creations magically fly. I shoot my photo and I find my image with magic every time. When I have the right things all around me, instantly everything goes in the right place on the paper, and in the lens – colors, shapes, circles, lines – always it happens. The magic always happens. I never think about my artistic process . . . never because I hate to plan anything.
What kinds of applications and tools do you use? And how have they influenced your creative process?
I photograph because I want everything in continuous motion, and, yet, perfectly still.
What are some trends or visual styles you appreciate in contemporary art?
I think that the digital art is the new form of art. It’s the art of today; the art of the future. I can create wonderful pieces, with my computer and software. It’s really incredible.
What are some of the most important considerations in creating art today?
It’s really a difficult question. I love my work very much, but naturally I want to breathe with my art. It’s difficult, wonderful love every day. I fell really free, when I create. I want to continue to do this. The rest is not very important. I could not do another career. I love art.
Where do you see your career in five years?
Oh, I’ll show my art on Pluto, naturally, or not?
Do you have any advice for artists just starting out?
Always to express themselves in complete freedom.
