Brooklyn and London unite in The King Canutes, an indie duo making waves with their latest single, “Cars and Girls.” This track is the second glimpse of their debut album, Eastern Seaboard, Perfect Summer, set to arrive via New Jersey’s Magic Door Record Label. With a cover that pays loving tribute to Prefab Sprout’s legendary Steve McQueen, fans of classic British pop will find plenty to love.
The King Canutes are Keir Woods, whose rich folk vocals and guitar work evoke the heart of Northern England, and Richard Alwyn Fisher, whose raw, Replacements-inspired style brings a taste of the American Midwest. The two met in Brooklyn’s vibrant indie scene in the early 2000s, later releasing their debut EP, Last Callers and Losers, in 2008.

Their upcoming album is a true collaborative effort, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ray Ketchem (Guided by Voices, Luna, Elk City, Gramercy Arms) at Magic Door Recording Studio. The record also features contributions from a host of acclaimed musicians, including Kendall Meade (Sparklehorse, Mascott), Mike Dillon (Rickie Lee Jones), John Leon (Roky Erickson), David Nagler (Nova Social, Joan Baez, Aaron Neville), Doug McEachern (Suran Song in Stag), Renée LoBue (Elk City), and Verena Wiesendanger (Semi Gloss).
“Cars and Girls” is out now on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, and all major streaming platforms. The full album, Eastern Seaboard, Perfect Summer, drops November 21st and is available for pre-order.
