Rex and the Rhythm (Rex) is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer who spent his formative years in the music studios of international superstar Eddy Grant, located on his historic plantation in Barbados.
.
Rex began playing the drums at the age of nine. He later learned to play the guitar and bass. When he was 15, his mother enrolled him in a band she co-founded called Cover Drive, a Caribbean pop band that signed a deal with Polydor Records in the UK in 2010. With Rex on drums and co-vocals, the band achieved a number one hit with “Twilight,” which topped the UK Official Chart in 2012. That same year, Cover Drive scored three additional UK top ten hits, earned multi-platinum and silver certifications for their singles, and opened for artists like Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, and Lauryn Hill.
.
After graduating from Full Sail University in 2020, Rex released his debut EP, titled **#127 Solace**, in 2021. His solo sound retained the feel-good elements from his previous band’s music, but it incorporated less Caribbean influence and leaned more towards alternative R&B vibes. In December 2022, Rex performed as the opening act for Ashanti at The Hennessy Artistry Festival in Barbados. Then, in February 2023, he released his sophomore project, **Secrets Behind Our Smiles**. This project showcases Rex’s artistry with a more urban contemporary sound.
.
In 2024, Rex released “Highs & Grows”, a track inspired by 90s hip-hop legends including Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest. The song strikes a distinctive mark between psychedelic soul, alt-pop, and hip-hop for a cosmic journey of inner-evolution, honoring both the pitfalls and peaks of being human. “Highs & Grows” explores an array of live percussion, sun-drenched electric guitar, and transcendental lyricism that is complemented by reverberating euphoric harmonies, resulting in a kaleidoscopic and uplifting sound. “Umbrella” is a track written about an unexpected end to a relationship, and Rex captures the duality of our fluctuating emotions. The new single “Play My Guitar” is a soulful and dynamic track written about giving your everything, but being still taken for granted in a relationship.
