This initiative is a collaboration between Occhi Arts and Entertainment, a London and New York-based arts, PR & media platform, and Phoenix FTA Limited, a London-based sustainability strategies consultancy. Occhi Arts and Entertainment and Phoenix FTA Limited are inviting artists from around the world to creatively engage with key topics of concern at the COP27 Climate Summit, which will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from the 06th – 18th of November 2022. This initiative provides a wider audience of artists with an opportunity to visually express their views to world leaders and community stakeholders by producing 2D artwork (drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and photography) that relates to one of the following themes:
1. Climate injustice
This year’s Climate Summit hashtag is #JustAndAmbitious – but can Egypt deliver a just process, with Egyptian authorities being known for their relentless assault on civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the independent media?
Rights respecting climate action requires the full and meaningful participation of all stakeholders, particularly of groups most vulnerable to the harm of climate change, because the worst climate change impacts are already happening, and will continue to occur in the global south, which predominantly is home to black, brown, Asian, and Latino cultures and communities. It is these communities of colour that are disproportionately victimized by environmental hazards.
What does climate justice or injustice look like for you?
2. Beacon of hope
It is said that the antidote to cynicism is hope. What do you demand from COP27 to give you hope or what have you witnessed in the past year that gave or restored your hope that we can avert climate breakdown? How do you personally defeat #climatecynicism?
Our Objective
Our objective is to foster and establish an inclusive artists’ community that feels empowered to engage with global climate change politics by using their creativity, expressing their democratic voice, and participating in this vitally important discourse. We believe the project will help build a noteworthy platform to establish intergenerational collaboration with key stakeholders by raising awareness of COP27 and serve as a cross-sectional analysis that will allow deeper insights into how we perceive the severity of climate change. It fosters political engagement, participation in the democratic process, and voices interdisciplinary concerns.
Submission Process
Participants will be required to submit one image (max file size: 500KB/300 dpi) with full details of the size and chosen medium, a short artist biography (max 150 words), and a written summary of how the artwork relates to at least one of the chosen themes. Please include your social media links so we may include you on our Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and Instagram feeds. Please forward your submission via email to submissions@occhimagazine.com. Please title your email subject ‘COP27 Art Submission’.
Early submissions (artwork submitted before 30th October 2022) will be featured on the Occhi Contemporary Art website from the 6th of November 2022 to coincide with the launch of COP27.
The call for submissions will be open for the duration of COP27, which ends on Friday 18th November 2022.
A final selection of works, selected on how they meet the submission brief, will permanently feature online and in a publication to be produced after and in response to COP27 key outcomes.
There is no initial cost for submitting artwork, but artists selected for the post-event publication are required to pay an administration fee of $27 (US). The fee supports the publication and its distribution, publicising of artwork, and showcasing the selected artists via Occhi and third-party media platforms. We request that all artists provide their Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter accounts so they are tagged in our social media posts. The featured artists and artworks will be announced approximately two weeks after the official deadline to ensure that our curators and editorial team give their full attention to each applicant’s work.
Hello gentlemen, congratulations on the initiative of this call for COP27.
I sent my application by e-mail, but I didn’t receive an answer to know if it worked, if you received my work.
I look forward to hearing from you, thank you.
