Michael B. Sutton is a veteran Motown producer, singer, songwriter, and film scorer with over two decades of experience in the music industry. He was born in Oakland, California, the second child of be-bop trumpet player Burnett Sutton and his wife Lula Mae. Michael’s grandmother steered him toward the Church of The Living God, where he began writing songs for the great James Cleveland and playing organ for gospel choirs around Los Angeles. After completing his studies, he began producing at Motown Records in Los Angeles, California. During his tenure at the label, he worked with some of the most iconic artists of the time, such as Michael Jackson, Thelma Houston, Smokie Robinson, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and many more. His work helped shape the sound of Motown and cemented its place in music history. Michael B. Sutton is well-known in the industry for his personable nature, honesty, integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
His tenure as a member of ASCAP for over thirty years has earned him the reputation of being a premier artist, composer, and producer. He has written, produced, and scored over 300 songs for major artists as well as for film and television. Some of his accomplishments include co-producing “Down To Love Town” by the Originals, writing Cheryl Lynn’s “Shake It Up Tonight,” and part of Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall” album. He has also composed and produced music with or for Jay Z- Kanye West, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Anita Pointer, and Pat Boone, to name a few. Michael B. Sutton is a visionary in the music industry, and his contributions to the industry will be remembered for years to come.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with Occhi Magazine. For those who may not be familiar with your background, what initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts?
I embarked on my artistic journey through my early immersion in Gospel music and the captivating sounds of Motown Records during the 1970s. Nurtured within the confines of a church environment, my relationship with music deepened, revealing its remarkable ability to ignite inspiration and elevate spirits. This profound connection set the course for my career in music, granting me the privilege of participating in diverse facets of the industry over the years.
Can you share some of your early influences and how they have left their mark on your career?
In the early stages of my musical journey, I found immense inspiration from Gospel legends like James Cleveland. Their unwavering dedication to music and their ability to forge deep connections with their audiences made a profound impact on me. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with iconic artists such as Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, and more at Motown, those experiences provided invaluable lessons in both creativity and professionalism.
Could you pinpoint three traits that you believe define you as an artist?
Three defining traits that encapsulate who I am as an artist would be passion, resilience, and creativity. These qualities have served as the driving force propelling my musical career forward.
We’d love to hear about your latest project. Could you tell us more about it?
My latest endeavor is a brand-new single titled “Nothing Can Come Between Us,” a heartfelt SADE cover featuring my wife, Aneessa. The song holds a special significance as it reflects our journey together, overcoming obstacles and the efforts of others trying to keep us apart. It’s a testament to the greater plan that God has in store for us, echoing the lyrics:
“Always hope that you remember
We’ll never really learn the meaning of it all
What we have is strong and tender
So hold on
In the middle of the madness
When the time is running out and you’re left alone
All I want is you to know that
It’s strong still, can’t pull us apart

I’m excited to share that I have several captivating projects in the pipeline with my label THE SOUND OF L.A – www.thesoundofla.com .
