This fall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts launches its 25/26 season with a lineup that celebrates the artistry of its ten resident organizations, embraces the vibrant global communities of New York City, and champions the next generation of creative trailblazers. Among the season’s standout events is the return of “Passing the Crown”—an electrifying fusion of orchestral music, hip-hop, and dance, set to take over the Wu Tsai Theater at David Geffen Hall on October 12.
At the heart of “Passing the Crown” is none other than MC Lyte, a Hip-Hop icon, trailblazer, and multiple Gold Record recording artist. Known as one of the genre’s most influential voices, MC Lyte brings her legendary flow to the stage, headlining a night that reimagines hip-hop’s legacy through a powerful, gender-expansive lens.
Originally commissioned for Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City festival, this groundbreaking production is more than a concert—it’s an immersive experience. Imagine cinematic orchestration colliding with the raw energy of DJing, breaking, and freestyle, all brought to life by an all-female and gender-expansive collective of award-winning artists. The result? A live orchestral mixtape and dance extravaganza that pays homage to the visionary women who have shaped—and continue to shape—the sound and soul of hip-hop.
The creative force behind “Passing the Crown” is violinist and composer Juliette Jones, who serves as executive producer and concept originator. She is joined by associate producer Monique Brooks Roberts and Emmy Award-winning choreographer Randi “Rascal” Freitas, whose dynamic leadership pushes the boundaries of genre and performance. Together, they craft a show that’s both a tribute and a call to action—a celebration of legacy, community, and the future of hip-hop.
Adding to the night’s authenticity and flair, legendary streetwear designer April Walker of Walker Wear and The Future Been Female imprint brings her iconic style to the stage, ensuring every look is as bold and boundary-breaking as the music itself.
“Passing the Crown” is more than an event—it’s a movement. It honors the women who laid the foundation for hip-hop, uplifts the community, and inspires the next generation to claim their space and tell their stories. The performance will also feature American Sign Language interpretation, ensuring an inclusive celebration for all.
On October 12, join Lincoln Center for a night where rhythm, royalty, and revolution collide. “Passing the Crown” isn’t just about passing the torch—it’s about celebrating it, together. Experience the future of hip-hop in the heart of New York City, where every beat and every move honors the past and ignites what’s next.
