Polartropica -Occhi Magazine: Showcasing Independent Artists, Creative Projects & Inspiring Stories in Visual Arts, Music, Film, and Literature

Los Angeles-based galactic dream rock artist and livestreamer Polartropica continues to carve out a singular space in the indie music universe. Once crowned LA Weekly’s best indie pop band, Polartropica has defined a genre of ethereal synth psychedelia that’s both mesmerizing and refreshingly original. Her work has captured the attention of numerous publications, and her latest music video earned a nomination at the Berlin Music Video Awards—just one of many signs that she’s an artist on the rise and not to be missed.

Polartropica’s recent induction as a member of the Recording Academy marks another milestone in her creative journey. Her SXSW tour featured shows in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Austin, including an official showcase for Lush UK. She has headlined iconic venues such as the Troubadour, The Paramount, and LA Pride’s Hollywood Main Stage, and has opened for artists like Poppy at The Novo in Los Angeles and at House of Blues in San Diego.

Her music is as versatile as it is imaginative. Tracks by Polartropica have been featured as NPR/Capradio’s theme for the Midpacific podcast “Can’t Hold Us Back,” in the Blumhouse horror feature film Unseen with “Give Them Hell,” and in A24’s How to Blow Up a Pipeline, which includes her track “Terminator.”

Polartropica’s latest single, “Shiny Things,” is a heartfelt collaboration with Americana artist Gilbert Louie Ray. She explains, “The song was inspired by my father’s love for John Denver and his beautiful cinematic melodies I grew up listening to, as well as the sweet classic harmonies of the Everly Brothers and surfy electric guitars of the Beach Boys.” The single features banjo and acoustic guitar from Gilbert Louie Ray and electric guitars by Brandon Graham, who also engineered and mixed the track. The result is a genre-defying anthem that explores the bittersweet pain sometimes found at the end of love. Polartropica confides, “This song is about eventually finding it in your heart to learn and grow from all the hard lessons and finally let go with a sense of understanding and acceptance, which is a journey in itself, and coming back home to yourself with love and forgiveness.”

“Shiny Things” arrives alongside a cinematic music video—a swashbuckling adventure featuring a legendary, sun-kissed pirate of the Salton Sea who receives a parking ticket on her ship. Filmed and directed by Tristan Pelletier on the hottest day of summer in the desert, the video perfectly captures the whimsical and adventurous spirit that defines Polartropica’s artistry.

With every release, Polartropica invites listeners to embark on a journey of imagination, emotion, and self-discovery—proving she’s truly a star in the making.
