Princeton Holt’s comic fantasy “2050” is released On Demand and DVD this January from Uncork’d Entertainment. The film tells the story of a married video game developer (David Vaughn) introduced to a company customizing androids for human companionship. Will the consequences of his affections for an android have disastrous effects?
The film ambitiously attempts to address a meaningful subject- the slippery slope of where we are going as a population ruled by new technological advancements. Quite rightly, it raises an important discussion regarding how technology is used, potentially to the detriment of our social fabric. It also allows us all to consider our own compass regarding what is right or wrong in the pursuit of happiness. Fundamentally, how would the existence of such androids help form and sustain a culturally rich and socially cohesive community?
Whilst the objectives of the film seem evident, the delivery is unfortunately lackluster and wanting. The ensemble of actors including Dean Cain, Irina Abraham, Devin Fuller, and Stefanie Bloom provide adequate performances. Princeton Holt’s direction is enough to keep your interest but the score and consistent music create a disconnect and is often an irritating distraction.
In summary, like the subject matter, this film will create an opinion. It has been recognized but this isn’t Westworld. Its execution in addressing very interesting and overlapping topics is slightly underwhelming but thankfully the performances will carry you to the end of what is a mediocre feature.
