Lael Summer -Occhi Magazine: Showcasing Independent Artists, Creative Projects & Inspiring Stories in Visual Arts, Music, Film, and Literature
In recognition of Suicide Awareness Month, The Lael Project has released a posthumous remix that pays tribute to the late New York soul/pop singer-songwriter Lael Summer. The track, a luminous cover of the Daryl Hall and John Oates classic ‘Do What You Want, Be What You Are’, is brought to new life by longtime collaborators Tomás Doncker and James Dellatacoma. This release is more than just music—it is a celebration of Lael’s enduring spirit and a rallying call for mental health awareness.
.
Originally unveiled in 2013, Lael’s version quickly became one of her most beloved performances, radiating her trademark honesty, courage, and vulnerability. Though her journey was heartbreakingly cut short in 2017 at just 24, Lael’s artistry continues to inspire and connect listeners across the world. Her guiding belief—“If I can help just one person through my music, then I’ve done my job”—remains the heartbeat of The Lael Project, founded by her mother, Marla Mase. Today, the project channels Lael’s legacy into a mission of suicide prevention, healing, and hope.
.
The timing of this remix’s release is intentional and profound. It serves as both a celebration of Lael’s artistry and a vital reminder: we must live authentically, support one another, and speak openly about mental health. Through music, The Lael Project invites us to honor Lael’s memory by fostering conversations that can save lives.
