If you’re looking for an artist who seamlessly blends Caribbean roots with modern alternative R&B, Rex and the Rhythm (Rex) should be on your radar. A multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and producer, Rex’s musical journey began on the legendary plantation studios of international superstar Eddy Grant in Barbados. Those early days, soaking up the creative energy of such an iconic environment, set the stage for a career that’s as dynamic as it is impressive.
.
Rex’s love affair with music started young—he picked up the drums at just nine years old, later expanding his repertoire to guitar and bass. At 15, his mother brought him into the Carib-pop band she co-founded, Cover Drive. The band quickly made waves, signing to Polydor Records in the UK in 2010. With Rex on drums and co-vocals, Cover Drive rocketed to the top of the charts, scoring a number one hit with “Twilight” on the UK Official Chart in 2012. The same year, the band notched up three UK top ten singles, earned multi-platinum and silver plaques, and shared stages with global icons like Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, and Lauryn Hill.
After graduating from Full Sail University in 2020, Rex set out to carve his own path. His debut EP, #127 Solace (2021), captured the feel-good energy of his Cover Drive days but pivoted towards a more alternative R&B sound, trading some of the Caribbean sunshine for urban, contemporary vibes. Rex’s momentum kept building—he opened for Ashanti at The Hennessy Artistry festival in Barbados in December 2022, and followed up with his sophomore project, Secrets Behind Our Smiles, in early 2023. This project showcased even more of Rex’s evolving artistry, layering urban contemporary sounds with honest, relatable songwriting.
.
Now, Rex returns with his latest single, “Without You”—a track that started as a simple loop in 2022 and blossomed into a lush, groove-driven arrangement. With tight guitar lines, warm bass, and velvet-smooth keys, Rex channels the emotional aftermath of a romantic fallout. The result is a song that wraps listeners in rhythm and keeps them swaying, even as it explores the ache of heartbreak.
.
Speaking about the new single, Rex shares, “‘Without You’ is about how dull life feels after a serious relationship ends, and the vices we turn to—or sometimes abuse—to make ourselves feel better and lighten the grief. It’s about those universal questions: ‘How long will it take me to get over this?’ and ‘Why is it so damn hard?’ I wanted the hook to be relatable to everyone, while the verses use vivid imagery, staying in the world of Andy and Silk Sonic’s sauce.”
.
With each new release, Rex and the Rhythm proves he’s an artist unafraid to evolve—drawing on his Caribbean heritage while pushing into new, soulful territory. Keep an ear out: Rex is just getting started, and his rhythm is impossible to ignore.
