We had the delight in interviewing singer Mandi Macias. Check out the interview below.
Hi, Mandi! Thank you for granting the interview. Your music is awesome, and we’re excited to speak with you about it. Tell us about the HIGH SCHOOL NATION TOUR.
First off thank you for this interview. I’m So excited about the High School Nation Tour! I’m going to 5 different schools with 2,000-4,000 students at each concert. I just finished my first day of the tour and of course, I’m exhausted. I had such a great time performing and especially singing my new song “Be Like That”. The students were really enjoying the song as well. I hope people understand that my new song is about a bad relationship where somebody tries to control you, hurt you with their words, but you rise above and let them know that you are no longer going to hurt me and that I’ll rise above and stay positive. It’s basically asking why do you have to Be Like That, and sorry I have to be like (my lyrics). That’s what my new song is about. The audience embraced my song with lots of cheers, so that made me happy! The Tour is a great way to reach lots of people. They can hear my music and watch me perform, sing, dance and have a great time on stage!
Tell us what inspires your music?
I’m driven by many different things in life that inspire my music. It can be hanging out with good friends listening to music in a backyard to a bad breakup with a friend. Also, I find myself waking up in the middle of the night with lyrics in my head and a melody to go along with the lyrics. I’ll get up at 3 am and go into my studio (music room) and just start playing my keyboard and then next thing I’ll start doing is writing. I have no exact way of how it happens, It just happens. I will write for days then have a dry spell. Hahahaha, I guess only another songwriter can relate to what I’m talking about.
You’re known as songwriter. How important is it to write your own music?
I love to write my own music, it is important to me because it gives me a place to let my inner thoughts out, also to release certain emotions and so I started writing at age 8 when my nanny passed away. It was dramatic for me and seeing her husband sad was hard for me, both of them were more like grandparents to me. So I wrote a song to sing to her husband, about his wife Barbara (my nanny) and I named the song “Old Pal”. I have never released that song and maybe one day but for now, it’s in my private unreleased music.
What has been your biggest challenge as a singer?
Hmm, challenge? I guess my breathing while I sing, but I have that under control now. My vocal teacher really helped me conquer that because I really struggled with my breathing.
What do you enjoy most about inspiring others to follow their dreams?
I love to encourage people to follow their passion, their dreams. I follow mine and that alone inspires people that are close to me. I don’t sugar coat the process, just because you have a passion and love it doesn’t mean it’s not hard work, or challenging. It is well worth all the hard work though so I always make sure they hear those last words “IT IS WORTH THE HARD WORK”!!!!
How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?
My music is on most music platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Play, YouTube music, etc. I also have a website at mandimacias.com and my music is listed there as well as my music videos.
Who are your musical icons/influences?
Halsey, Dua Lipa, Neighborhood, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Beyonce. They all have such strong beautiful voices, amazing music and they know what they want, which inspires me.
When looking back on the production of your music, what resonated with you the most and why?
Well, I think right now thinking about my music that I’ve already made, I noticed that because I haven’t had a lot of relationships or branched out in life yet, a lot of my songs talk about hanging out in backyards. I wrote my song SITMF MEANS Say it to My Face, I think that says it all, don’t be fake, don’t talk behind someone’s back, just be real. With the “Me to Movement” and Bullying I think some of my songs really tap on those issues. I wrote my song “Young Girl” this one is about a teenage girl who drinks from a red cup (alcohol) and drinks too much and passes out and is taken advantage of by a boy. The Lyrics in this song talks about “ don’t grow up so fast”, enjoy being a kid. I felt this was important because when I was in middle school kids were already drinking alcohol and drugs and having sex and they were only 12-14 years old. “Young Girl” has over 11K streams on Spotify and it’s only been out for 2 months. Many people have cried to this song, it’s a pretty deep song.
In your opinion, how could a singer make an impact on the world?
We have such power as singer/songwriters by touching on subjects that so many people can relate to. Subjects like war, broken hearts, romance, death so many things that others relate to. Songs have helped me during my happy times & sad ones as well. I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to put a smile on someone’s face or make them feel empowered to not be bullied, or maybe one day they will play one of my songs for their wedding, who knows. Music has such an impact on people’s lives.
If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose this career? Would you do anything differently?
I would not change a thing! I love what I’m doing. I do not know where this career will take me but I definitely will stay somewhere in the music industry. I’m an actor too, I was in a movie when I was little and I have been in acting classes for years. I think that acting actually has helped me with my performance on stage. I was in Play production throughout my childhood up to 8th grade. I got the lead role in High School Musical I played Gabriella my last year of Middle school. I love to perform and act so I will stay in this industry. I also want to produce music, ghostwrite and learn way more about music and production. Who knows maybe I’ll be an AR of a record label one day. I really don’t know what the future has in store for me, but I love music, it’s a big part of me! I also play the piano and guitar, would love to play the drums hmmm maybe I’ll take some lessons soon. [haha]
Do you have anything else you would like to share about your music or acting career?
Yes, look for Mandi Macias, I plan on pushing to the next level of my career and collaborating and writing with other artists. I’m not sure where I’ll be, but I will keep pushing forward towards my goals. Whatever happens in my life, music and performing will be a huge part of it, as long as my supporters, friends (aka fans) will have me in their lives, I will be inspired to keep bringing them my music.
