Renée Wynter has established herself as a must-watch artist in the industry. She has worked with many of the music industry’s notable producers and songwriters such as Bigg Wu, Luney Tunez, Tone Mason, Oshea Hunter, and Cory Rooney. For her latest single entitled ‘Speak’, Renée collaborates with Andreeena Mill, whose repertoire includes collaborations with Drake and Delisha Thomas. We caught up with Renee on the eve of the track’s official release to talk about her music and inspiration.
Hi Renee! Thank you for granting the interview. Your single is set to drop October 1st, 2019. Tell us more
I’m feeling really blessed. It’s been a long time coming. Over the last three years, I reconnected with Andreena Mill aka The BLK L$T and we’ve been creating ever since. Earlier this my friend Delisha and I went to visit Andreena in L.A and Speak was one of a few songs we wrote. I’ve had two kids since taking some time off and I’m here to inspire parents, we still got dreams and goals to get done. You’re never too old to dream a new dream!
What inspired your new single?
The ladies and I were talking about when being in a long-term relationship, we sometimes sweep things under the rug. We then get annoyed by that person on a daily basis and it’s like okay, enough now, let’s stop and talk about what’s going on with us? This is really about the lack of communication in a relationship that can be simply solved by just speaking.
The track is inspired by relationships and the importance of open communication. Do you think this touches on a wider modern-day societal issue?
I do. People are so disconnected. There’s not much personal connection nowadays. I’ve had conversations about this and a lot of people feel awkward in social situations. Think about it, most communication is through the cell phone, computer, tablet whatever people are using to send a message, Facetime or email. I’m here to remind people that it’s time to reconnect with people close to them. Go outside, put the cell phones in a box at the door, no cameras. When’s the last time you grabbed your partner’s face and just looked into their eyes? It’s time to live in the moment again. Make more good memories. Laugh more.
You’re known as a singer/songwriter. How important is it to write your own music?
I think it’s very important. As the artist, it’s always good to have some creative control about what your singing about. You’re out there singing the song every day you should be a part of that process. Knowing how to write is a very empowering feeling. You might think you can’t write your own music, but you can. Start today!
Tell us about your songwriting process and choosing a topic to sing about?
My songwriting process is all about having good vibes. I can feel when the energy is off in the room. I like to have fun and create. The topics are usually based on how I’m feeling that day or recent events. Conversations and melodies in the air. I hear melodies a lot then words follow.
What has been your biggest challenge as a singer/songwriter?
The biggest challenge has been broken promises and false hopes. A lot of the people in the music industry tell you they can help you make big career moves and they don’t come through.
Who are your musical icons/influences?
Some of my musical icons/influences are Prince, Tamia, Debroah Cox, and Mint Condition to name a few. There’s so many.
Speak is a collaboration with Andreeena Mill, whose repertoire includes collaborations with Drake and Delisha Thomas. Please tell us more about that experience
It was such a great learning opportunity. They’re very good at making you feel comfortable and vulnerable. Sometimes when you work with people it can feel uneasy. I’m blessed to call them my friends but still, working with your friends can be a good or bad thing. You have to work together and find out. The vibes were so on. It was something special.
When looking back on the production of your music, what resonates with you the most and why?
Looking back, what resonates most is the time and patience it took to create these songs. They capture moments in time like photos. You know when you look at a picture you can remember behind the scenes? That’s how I feel about each song.
We’re here to talk about ‘Speak’ but we’re also interested in your catering business. Please tell us more?
Our family business is called “Sweet like Dat” and I’m the Director of Operations. When my father retired he wanted to start up a business. He loves cooking and our family spends a lot of time in the kitchen, so it made sense to get into the food business. My family wanted to help him and here we are now. We’re in Nicey’s Brampton, Charlie’s and Danforth food Market in Mississauga, Caribbean Corner in Kensington Market and a few other locations. We make a product called “Solomon Gundy” it’s made from smoked red herring. You spread it on Jamaican water crackers. It’s spicy! We only cater to private events once in a while, but we hope to expand in the future.
How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?
