It’s that time! On February 24, 2019, at 5:00 PM PST (8:00 PM EST), the Oscars will be live at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, CA. For several weeks, social media has been ablaze with verbal battles over snubs and surprises. Of course, we want all of our favorites to have a chance at the coveted award, but we also know that’s impossible. Films are subjective. People enjoy watching them for different reasons. Our choices are personal. We choose films that resonate with us. There are a few that choose films based on their technical aspects, such as the cinematography, the costuming, and the set design.

Whether you agree or disagree, the films nominated certainly entertained us. The beauty of filmmaking is it stirs conversation. You can easily spend hours defending how beautifully made or how utterly horrible a film was made. Below is a short list of films available for rent via DVD Netflix. You be the judge. Feel free to leave a comment.

SNUB: Timothée Chalamet for Beautiful Boy

Timothée Chalamet magnificently played an addicted adolescent in Beautiful Boy. Although this role scored him a Golden Globe, it got his a SNOSCAR (Oscar Snub).

Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy takes you on a journey of recovery, relapse, and survival as a family copes with the horrifying effects of addiction. It is heartbreaking to see someone you love go through it.

SNUB: Eighth Grade

A coming-of-age story that didn’t make the grade. It was insightful and cast with amazing talent. Still, it couldn’t tempt a nomination.

As Kayla navigates the final week of middle school, she must face what it means to be an introverted adolescent before she begins high school. The film earned the award for Original Screenplay from the Writers Guild of America.

SNUB: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

You would think a nostalgic portrait of Mister Rogers would earn an Oscar nod, but such was not the case for this film. It only garnered $22.9 million at the box office. Morgan Neville (the Director) examines Fred Rodgers legacy in a documentary. The documentary received high-remarks from Rotton Tomatoes, IMDb, Facebook, and Google.

SURPRISE: Willem Dafoe for At Eternity’s Gate

I can’t say enough how much I admire Willem Dafoe’s work. He should have been nominated years ago. “At Eternity’s Gate” was nominated for Best Actor.
