London’s Whitechapel Gallery is inviting artists and art collectives living and working in London to participate in a triennial exhibition that showcases the vibrancy and diversity of the capital’s art scene. You can apply for The London Open between Friday 16th October and Friday 27th November 2020.
Since 1932 the Whitechapel Gallery’s open submission exhibition has been a launchpad for leading contemporary artists in the early stages of their career including Larry Achiampong, Frank Bowling, Alice Channer, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Grayson Perry, Heather Phillipson, and Rachel Whiteread. Artworks submitted for The London Open can be in any medium, including painting, sculpture, moving image, photography, drawing, performances, and installations.
Established to showcase the work of East London artists, The London Open exhibition has expanded to include artists from all over London, recognizing the Gallery’s role in the capital’s cultural landscape and reputation for exhibiting current concerns in contemporary art. Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel comprising of:

With Emily Butler, Mahera and Mohammad Abu Ghazaleh Curator, Wells Fray-Smith, Assistant Curator at Whitechapel Gallery, and Inês Costa, Curatorial Assistant at Whitechapel Gallery.
The list of selected artists will be announced in February 2021. The London Open will be on display at Whitechapel Gallery from 15 June – 2 September 2021.

Please note:
- Only work made during or after 2018 will be considered.
- All images should be shared as JPEGS with a maximum file size of 1MB. No other formats will be accepted.
- Each image file must be named with your surname, first name, and a number from 1-5 e.g. SmithJohn1.jpg. This number should correspond with the image information on your online application form.
- If your work or documentation involves moving images or sound, please upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and paste links in the relevant boxes. Each clip must be no longer than 5 minutes long and must be labeled so that it is easily identifiable as your work.
- You may submit a mixture of images, audio links, and videos but only a maximum of 5 examples of your practice in total.
- Please bear in mind that the jury will be making their selection from the visual material submitted. If selected you are selected for the exhibition, Whitechapel Gallery curators will also arrange a studio visit to discuss the work for the show.
- Please do not send any additional material, including catalogs, photographs, or anything further in support of your application. This cannot and will not be reviewed by the selection panel and it will not be possible to return such materials to you.
