Tiwani Contemporary is excited to announce Joy Labinjo’s solo exhibition, “We Are Briefly Gorgeous,” which will open at Southwark Park Galleries on Friday, July 5th. Joy Labinjo’s large-scale figurative paintings often portray intimate scenes from historical and contemporary life, whether real or imagined. Her work is based on figures found in personal and archival imagery, including family photographs, found images, and historical material. In her previous work, she has explored themes such as identity, political voice, power, Blackness, race, history, community, and family, and their role in contemporary experience. This marks Labinjo’s third solo institutional exhibition in the United Kingdom.

Tiwani Contemporary has commissioned Joy Labinjo’s first monograph, supported by The A.G. Leventis Foundation, which is set to launch this Autumn. For Southwark Park Galleries’ 40th anniversary programme, Labinjo will present a new body of work celebrating Southwark’s local community in her largest London institutional exhibition to date. The works will be inspired by scenes from Southwark Park and the Bermondsey area, based on Labinjo’s observations of people interacting with the surroundings and each other. Using a combination of taken and found imagery, the paintings aim to evoke a sense of familiarity and inclusivity for a wide range of viewers.

The initiative is commissioned by Southwark Park Galleries, London, and generously supported by Arts Council England, Tiwani Contemporary, London, and OMNI. The exhibition runs from 6 July – 29 September 2024  at Southwark Park Galleries, Lake Gallery, 1 Park Approach, Southwark Park, London SE16 2UA. The Private Viewing is on Friday 5 July 6-8 pm.
