Trigger Mafia is quintessential rock revival with a modern spin. Coming from all walks of life, the band is set on a path to personify some of the most pressing issues of today as well as document the human condition in the rawest of forms. As humble musicians, the band believes in the power of music and what it offers in these strange and uncertain times. On the release of the band’s first single “Find a Better Way,’ we caught up with band member Shawn Meehan to find out what we can look forward to.
Hi Shawn, thank you for granting the interview. Congratulations on forming Trigger Mafia and producing such a memorable debut track. Firstly, how did the band form?
The drummer, bass player, and I found ourselves with not much to do once the pandemic kicked in, so we started to get together a few times a week and started writing and jamming new tunes purely for enjoyment and some therapy (laughs)! We’ve been playing together with various bands over the years and we are basically family. Our get-togethers became more than a jam or rehearsal session and molded into group therapy sessions. We started to share how we felt about the state of the world and I guess it started to come out in the new music we wrote.
The theme of Find a Better Way provides a heavy sociopolitical tone. Can you share your inspiration for the track and tell us more about its production?
Over the last few months, we just couldn’t get away from the chaos of our present times. On the news, on social media, etc. It made us feel very concerned and helpless. We wanted to do something about it. My stepdad once told me, when you have a hard time processing your emotions, put it in the songs. So that’s what we did.
Artists have the power to influence. Do you feel there’s a shift in how influential artists, particularly musicians, are in the current political climate?
Absolutely! I think you’re going to see a shift in music trends leaning more towards political expression. Very similar to the great music that was released during the civil rights movement.
Please tell us more about the video and its composition?
We wanted to connect the dots from the past to our current political climate. It seems that we really haven’t learned much, and we wanted to show that we keep repeating our mistakes. That’s why we go between old footage and current times.
This is the band’s first single. What should we expect from Trigger Mafia’s first album?
People can definitely expect a musical journey. We have a song about brotherly love influenced by some of our favorite Canadian power rock bands of the ’70s. We have another about the darker side of the current political climate. There’s a tongue and cheek look at today’s SJWs and we even have a party anthem song to round it out.
2020 has been a challenging year for the creative industries, particularly independent artists. In addition to working on the track, how have you managed to keep motivated and inspired?
Yes! In fact, it’s been a very creative year for us. I guess using music as a type of therapy has come in handy in creating this new record!
What other projects should we look forward to seeing you involved in?
We are currently putting the final touches on a six-song record. So more singles are coming and we’ll be recording a live video set in the studio before the end of the year!
