Nish Media presents its exciting new variety television series titled ‘Pulse’, capturing the unbreakable relationship between Canada’s Indigenous peoples and the art of dance. The 13-part series, which dives deep into Indigenous peoples’ passion for dancing, will be making its premiere on APTN on October 7th, 2022.
Pulse will showcase how Indigenous dancers are revolutionizing the art of movement across traditions and dance styles. With stunning visuals, captivating characters, unique stories, and breathtaking performances, Pulse is a variety series like none other. Each dancer has a journey. Each dance conveys emotion. Combined they hold the power to unite and heal. We are all
connected to the rhythm. Every heart has a beat. Every beat has a heart. We can all feel it within us… The Pulse. They say dance began as an instinctive response to the beat of the human heart. As Indigenous people, they translate that heartbeat with the drum, and their visceral connection to the earth is expressed when they let their bodies feel the earth’s heartbeat. Perhaps there is a reason why “heart” and “earth” make the most beautiful anagram. Long before the arrival of colonialism, dance was an important part of their ceremonies, their social lives, and their way of communicating with one another. Dance is to the human body what wind is to Mother Earth. It moves freely, inspired by the surrounding elements. It brings things together in a single embrace. The combination of movement and rhythm crosses cultural barriers as no language can.
While Indigenous people continue to dance during ceremonies and powwows, they have let their identity shine through other dances like hip-hop, ballet, and contemporary dance. They have taken their connection to sound and movement into non-traditional forms of dance and they now shine internationally for this ability to fuse who they are with the way the
move.“Dance has always been a part of Indigenous cultures and we really wanted to show the place that it holds for different dancers today.” says producer Jason Brennan. “People will be fascinated not only by the styles but by the stories behind each of these performers. The show combines style and grace in a way that I don’t think has been seen before.”
Each episode will focus on one professional dancer. All the Pulse dancers are considered professionals in their own right as they have dedicated their lives to dance, and their extensive knowledge of their art form is irrefutable. Through each protagonist’s journey, we will get to know them as human beings and understand what fuels their inner fire. We will follow them as they prepare to share a few performances with us. The main thread of each episode will be the buildup to these performances, but it will also be braided with other smaller narrative threads like the history of their dance style, their life outside of dance, the challenges they face, and how this all ties into their connection to their Indigenous identity.
The series will be making its premiere on APTN on October 7th.
