Natja Brunckhorst’s “Two to One” is a heartwarming ensemble comedy that explores friendship, community, love, and the clash between socialism and capitalism, set during the sweltering summer of 1990 in East Germany.
The story follows childhood friends Maren, Robert, and Volker, who stumble upon a fortune in soon-to-be-worthless East German currency just weeks before reunification. With time running out, they rally their neighbors in their crumbling apartment block to devise an audacious plan: exchange the cash for goods and outsmart the incoming Western capitalists. However, the sudden wealth tests the community’s socialist values, raising the question: can they handle this windfall without losing themselves?
Following its World Premiere at the Munich Film Festival, where Screen Daily praised it as a “comedy with heart,” Two To One was also featured at the Glasgow Film Festival in March. The film boasts standout performances from Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, Toni Erdmann), Max Riemelt (Sense8, Berlin Syndrome), and Ronald Zehrfeld (Phoenix, Barbara), and is set to charm UK audiences with its unique blend of humor and heart.
