This month, Virginia’s own Caleb L’Etoile introduces ‘American Death’—a sweeping, genre-blending album that journeys from folk-rooted introspection to the soaring peaks of passionate rock. The record pulses with urgency and emotional depth, reflecting the turbulent times in which it was created.
Describing the project as “an anti-fascist album written during, and heavily inspired by, a specific time in history and political events,” Caleb delves into themes of evil, greed, human rights, and what it means to call a place home. “The goal was to make a ‘living’ album—building it track by track, releasing songs as they were written,” he explains. “I felt compelled to speak out as recent events unfolded, so an open-ended, evolving release felt like the right way to capture that immediacy.”
The album’s powerful finale, “Kerosene,” stands out with its driving percussion and surging guitars, balancing moments of raw rock energy with lush, harmonious vocals that rise into shimmering keys. “This is probably my favorite moment on the album, both lyrically and musically,” Caleb shares. “I wanted to evoke the chaos of a plane crash in the latter half, and I think I pulled it off. There are echoes of Modest Mouse’s ‘Shit Luck,’ the spirit of Destroyer’s ‘Rubies,’ and a definite nod to mewithoutYou in the closing moments.”
‘American Death’ is a testament to Caleb L’Etoile’s fearless creativity—an album that invites listeners to reflect, feel, and engage with the world around them.
