Vertigo Releasing, in association with IFC and Shudder, is bringing a new dose of brutal, visceral horror to the big screen this spring. Dolly arrives in UK cinemas from 6th March, promising a slasher experience that leans into raw intensity while paying homage to the genre’s blood-soaked roots.
Starring Fabianne Therese (John Dies at the End), Russ Tiller (Blood for Dust), Eve Blackhurst, Michalina Scorzelli, and Kate Cobb (Okie), the film also features Ethan Suplee (My Name Is Earl) and Seann William Scott (American Pie). Perhaps most strikingly, Dolly introduces Max the Impaler as its physically imposing, eponymous antagonist — a presence designed to haunt the frame as much as the characters trapped within it.
.
Directed by Rod Blackhurst, Dolly expands on the filmmaker’s earlier short film Babygirl, evolving that original concept into a full-length feature that feels hulking, brooding, and unapologetically dark. It’s a project that functions as a tribute to classic 1970s slashers — the era where horror was gritty, grimy, and grounded in dread — while still carving out its own unsettling identity. Rather than simply recreating familiar beats, Blackhurst aims to twist them, pushing the story into more psychologically disturbing territory.
.
At the centre of the film is Macy, a young woman abducted by a monstrous figure with a chilling objective: to raise her as their own child. It’s a premise that immediately shifts the horror from simple pursuit into something more intimate and deeply unsettling — a nightmare built not only on violence, but on control, captivity, and a warped version of family.
With Blackhurst directing and co-writing alongside Brandon Weavil, Dolly positions itself as a modern slasher with old-school menace — a film that understands the power of simplicity, but isn’t afraid to get ugly in the execution.
