Milton Suggs possesses a voice and musical artistry that is a testament to his heritage and the many talented African American musicians who have influenced his work. His music is firmly rooted in the blues and he sings with a rich baritone that is reminiscent of greats such as Joe Williams. He is also able to convey deep emotions with the soulful intensity of singers like Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gayle, while also displaying a smooth and silky tone reminiscent of Nat King Cole.

Born in Chicago, IL, a third-generation musician, Suggs recognized music as a gift from a young age; it was later that he would accept it as a calling. While growing up in Atlanta, GA, though continually exposed to music of varying styles, it was with his church choir at the age of seven that Milton garnered his first experiences with singing and performance.  Milton’s talents in jazz have been recognized and appreciated by many throughout his years as a prominent figure in the industry. He has collaborated with various artists and bands, including Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Orrin Evans, Wycliffe Gordon, Ulysses Owens, and Marquis Hill, among others. Not only has he been active in his collaborations, but he has also been consistent in producing his own music with four albums to date. Additionally, Milton continues to explore new projects with different ensembles, showcasing his creativity and versatility as a musician.

Milton Suggs’ latest album, “Pure Intention,” released under Imani Records, is a testament to the singer’s exceptional talent in lyric writing and interpretation. The album features the gifted pianist, Michael King- a fellow Chicagoan and a long-time friend. Suggs’ storytelling ability is masterfully complemented by the harmonically sophisticated and upper-echelon compositions of renowned artists, such as Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Buster Williams, Cedar Walton, and others. This album is Suggs’ first release in five years, and it is definitely worth listening to.

The album will be released this July 12th.
