This month, CBC and Netflix actor Kyle Meagher releases his latest single called “Just Talkin. Inspiration for the single stems from not knowing if someone is romantically interested but hoping they are feeling the same way. Co-written with Joe Jordan and produced by Mark Liggett and Jerry Lane, “Just Talkin'” dives into the realm of raw emotion to create an upbeat and positive anthem. We caught up with Kyle to talk about the track and future projects.

Hi Kyle, thank you for granting the interview. Congratulations and best wishes with your latest track. The single stems from not knowing if someone is romantically interested but hoping they are feeling the same way. Was this track inspired by personal experience?

Yes! “Just Talkin’” was inspired by personal experience, specifically from an experience I had with a girl that I was just beginning to spend a lot of time with. We were in that weird stage of a relationship where we were hanging out a lot and I was really into her but I wasn’t quite sure what exactly was going on. We were definitely flirting a lot (according to others at least), but I totally wasn’t prepared for a friend of ours to notice and totally out of the blue to ask “So are you guys dating?” right in front of her. It’s like time froze, neither of us really knew what to say, but somehow I managed to open my mouth to blurt out “Oh! Uh, I don’t know? We’re just talkin’ right now?”. I’m not sure it was the right answer for her and the relationship, in the end, didn’t work out, but the words “Just Talkin’” really kinda stuck in my head. I decided to write a song to explain that “Just Talkin’” isn’t a bad thing because it’s really about those sweet moments of uncertainty in dating before you put an official label on it.

The track is co-written with Joe Jordan and produced by Mark Liggett, who has produced and mixed music for the likes of the BeeGees, Billy Idol, and George Michael. Please share your experience of collaborating with Joe and Mark.

I have been working with Mark Liggett and Joe Jordan for quite a while now actually! From my first song “Nowhere,” to my latest single “Just Talkin’,” both of them have been helping me out on my musical journey. It is fantastic to be able to write with Joe, as he is super talented and seems to have a way to make all of the stray thoughts I have swimming around in my head become more concrete and way less wordy (as I tend to have a habit to choose really large words when I write). On the other hand, working with Mark is also great because he has helped me in almost every aspect of my career, from helping me understand how the industry works, to helping my stage performance, to producing a lot of my songs, he really has had a drastic impact on my career so far. Mark has so much experience working with artists and shares feedback on how I can improve.  I am super thankful for both of their help.

Your recent accolades include receiving a silver award at the Global Music Awards for ‘ Beats in a Bagel Shop’’, your first Visual Album and EP.  The Visual Album and EP was nominated for “best musical” at the Orlando Film Festival and was an Official Selection at the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival. That must have been a great feeling?

Yes. “Beats in a Bagel Shop” was such an amazing project because it was both an EP that included 7 of my original songs but I had written them as a story from some experiences I had.  So when we put the album together and I began filming the music videos, I tied them all together and made it into a short film which did a festival tour.  It was honestly amazing to have my work recognized on such a large scale. It was also so rewarding because “Beats in a Bagel Shop” was a piece of myself, a story I had written and something I poured my heart into, and to see it be recognized on this level is an honor. This feeling keeps pushing me forward, so that I can keep creating, improving my music and helping my vision become reality.

The final season of Anne with an E was released on Netflix last month.  Do you have any TV/film projects else in the pipeline we can look forward to?

In terms of acting, I am participating in an upcoming TV pilot called 7 Hills, which is the project that began my musical career. When I was working on the pilot, the director knew that I was a singer and guitarist, so he had asked if I wanted to contribute a song to the soundtrack, which I did. I had a passion for it and began creating my own music thereafter. But now, 7 Hills has been picked up as a miniseries which will begin filming in the spring. I am super excited to get started on that! It has both an acting and a musical component so I will be able to combine both of my passions. I am also in the midst of creating my next EP and visual album which I will release in a similar fashion to “Beats in a Bagel Shop” and plan to have it completed this year as well. I’m also doing a music tour this summer and will be releasing the dates in the spring.

So where can we keep up to date with your activities?
