What personal experiences or turning points in your own family life inspired you to write ‘Your Family Needs You’?

The inspiration to write ‘Your Family Needs You’ wasn’t a slow build-up or a response to a single dramatic event. Instead, it was an immediate, powerful turning point that came straight out of a period of deep spiritual focus.

In January 2024, immediately following my church’s annual 21-day period of fasting and prayer, I experienced what I can only describe as a divine intervention. It was as if a switch had been flipped. I suddenly had an overwhelming, undeniable drive to write a book specifically about the critical role of the individual within the family unit.

The entire process was an outpouring of conviction. I wrote the book in just three weeks, practically completing one chapter a day. The material wasn’t something I had to research or struggle to create; it was all already fully formed in my head. There was no AI or external tool used—the book is a direct, organic translation of the deep principles and understanding that were imparted during that dedicated time of fasting and prayer.

It was this profound, post-fasting spiritual clarity and urgency that served as the true turning point, inspiring me to write ‘Your Family Needs You’ with the speed and conviction it demanded.

How did your childhood shape the perspectives and advice you share in the book?

My childhood played a massive part in shaping the perspectives and advice I share throughout ‘Your Family Needs You’. The book is, in many ways, a testament to the lessons learned while growing up in a large, dynamic family environment.

My father had 19 children in total, with 11 of us coming from his marriage to my mother. As you can imagine, most of what I learned in every department of life—from conflict resolution to resourcefulness—was directly sourced from those countless, everyday experiences with my siblings and children.

Even though we were a large family and had to navigate times when we didn’t have lots of money, those were truly great times because of one crucial factor: we worked together as a family.

This environment instilled fundamental, practical wisdom that became the bedrock of my book:

  • Resilience: Due to the sheer size of our family and the financial constraints, we all learned how to bounce back from setbacks, make do with what we had, and persist through difficulties. This quality of resilience is one of the most important things I encourage readers to build.
  • Teamwork and Unity: Success in a family that large is impossible without communication, cooperation, and a shared commitment to the family unit. The advice in my book champions this unity—the idea that the family is an interconnected team, and every single member is essential.

Therefore, the advice in ‘Your Family Needs You’ isn’t theoretical; it’s grounded in the real, hard-earned qualities like resilience, teamwork, and unity that my siblings and I developed simply by living life together.

What is the single most important message you hope readers will take away from your book?

The single most important message I hope readers will take away from ‘Your Family Needs You’ is one of action and investment:

This book is not a story about my family; it is about investing in your family. While my own experiences provided the foundational principles, the true value of the book lies in its practical application. I want readers to understand that if you genuinely use the techniques and advice found in these pages within your own home, it is designed to have a positive impact in so many different areas of family life.

The message is a call to action: The principles of unity, communication, and resilience outlined here are universal tools. Apply them consistently, and you will see transformative, positive changes in your relationships, your environment, and the future you are building together as a family.

Can you share a story from your own life that best illustrates the core message of the book?

To best illustrate the core message of ‘Your Family Needs You’—that applying specific techniques brings immediate, positive impact—I can share a very real, challenging time in my own home life. There was a period when my house was in complete disarray. My children were constantly verbally fighting each other, and the atmosphere was defined by shouting, screaming, and a complete lack of order. The stress and dysfunction were palpable; the family unit was fracturing.

This was a critical moment where we had to move from frustration to deliberate action. We realized we needed a structured way to communicate, address grievances, and restore peace. We decided to bring in family meetings. The introduction of these meetings was an absolute game-changer. They immediately started to change the whole dynamics of my house and brought peace. By creating a consistent, safe, and structured forum for everyone to be heard and for us to make decisions together, we successfully turned the chaos into cooperation.

This story perfectly encapsulates the book’s core message: Disorder is not permanent. When you consciously invest in your family by implementing proven techniques and structures—like our family meetings—you create a profound, positive shift.

How do you address the impact of modern societal pressures—like work or technology—on family relationships?

You must read the book to learn the specific techniques and rules we employed in those meetings, but the impact was instantaneous and proves that a small, structured intervention can significantly improve your home environment.

What misconceptions about family roles do you hope to challenge, and why are these important to confront?

We confront the fundamental misconception that family improvement starts with someone else.

The book operates on a crucial principle: “You can’t change anyone, only yourself.”

This theme is vital because it shifts the entire focus of the reader from blame to empowerment and action. By confronting the belief that an individual’s hands are tied until their spouse, child, or parent changes, we immediately give the reader the power to initiate positive change.

Why is this important to confront?

By confronting the external-blame mindset, we prioritize:

  1. Solutions: Instead of dwelling on what’s wrong or who’s at fault, the book provides practical, usable techniques (like the family meetings example) that you can start implementing today.
  2. Personal Investment: It forces the reader to take responsibility for their own behavior, attitude, and investment in the family unit.
  3. Life-Long Learning: It encourages a mindset where the family is viewed as a continually evolving unit where all members, starting with the reader, are committed to growth, improvement, and applying new techniques.

Ultimately, the book’s purpose is not to debate roles, but to offer solutions that lead to a stronger family unit, powered by life-long learning and individual responsibility

Let’s talk about NEXUS. What data or local trends led to the creation of the NEXUS initiative, and how did these shape your approach? Since its launch, what measurable impact has NEXUS had on reducing permanent exclusions among secondary students in Enfield?

The Reduction in Exclusion Numbers

  • Initial Drop: Enfield’s annual average of permanent exclusions was approximately 55 students before NEXUS was launched (around 2018).
  • Year One Impact: In the first year of NEXUS’s operation, this number dropped by over 60% to 21 permanent exclusions.
  • Sustained Success: This trend has continued, with the latest official data from the Department for Education (DfE) showing only 6 permanent exclusions for the year. This represents a reduction of nearly 90% from the prior average of 55.
  1. National and Local Ranking
  • The measurable impact has completely transformed Enfield’s reputation for managing student behaviour, moving the borough from having one of the highest permanent exclusion rates in London to currently holding the distinction of having the 4th lowest permanent exclusion rate in the entire country.
  1. Collaboration Across Support Services

It is important, as you noted, that NEXUS does not take all the glory. Nexus is a community-led project run by The Secondary Behaviour Support Service. The overall success is attributed to the coordinated, solution-focused relationship between partners, schools, and council services, under which both NEXUS and the Primary Behaviour Support Service operate Primary School Success. The Primary Behaviour Support Service has maintained an exclusion rate of zero for six consecutive years, demonstrating a deeply embedded preventative model across all phases of education.

This collective work highlights a successful model where early identification, tailored support, and strong relationships between the council’s behaviour teams and schools have led to a sustained, profound, and measurable decrease in permanent exclusions across the borough.

Can you share a specific success story or statistic that highlights the project’s positive outcomes for young people?

.

That’s a powerful question, and while I can’t share a single specific story due to the sheer volume of positive outcomes, your prompt actually hits on the most significant success metric of all.

The Success of Prevention: A Community-Wide Impact

Over the years, our project has supported hundreds of students, and our greatest success is measured in the stories we don’t have to tell—the stories of permanent exclusion.

For many young people, a permanent exclusion isn’t just a mark on a school record; it’s a stigma that can feel like exclusion by society itself. This sense of being marginalized is what often pushes vulnerable youth toward “unsavory groups” or negative life paths.

Our key statistic is a reduction in these numbers. By providing targeted intervention and support, we have been able to significantly decrease the rate of permanent exclusions. This single outcome has a multiplying, positive impact that extends far beyond the school gates:

  • Impact on Families: It relieves the intense pressure and stress placed on families, keeping them intact and functional.
  • Impact on the Community: By keeping young people engaged, learning, and off the streets, we automatically make our community stronger and safer. This creates an environment where more young people can truly flourish and achieve their full potential, rather than being defined by a single adverse incident.

In short, our success is not a single student’s triumph, but the collective benefit of hundreds of young people not having to carry the weight of a permanent exclusion into their adult lives.

How do you ensure that young people’s voices are included in both the design and evaluation of the project?

One of the ways we really amplify youth voices is through regular focus groups. We sit down with our young people to gather their insights, and it’s amazing how much their feedback shapes our curriculum and delivery methods. They truly help us design and adapt our workshops and programs in ways that resonate with them. In our workshops, we make sure that young people aren’t just sitting back and listening; instead, they actively participate as co-creators. It’s all about collaboration, and their input is invaluable in shaping the content and direction.

And let’s not forget about performance and showcases! At the end of our workshops and programs, the young participants get the chance to perform and present their creative pieces. It’s such a powerful way for them to express themselves and feel validated. They get to showcase what they’ve worked on, and it really highlights their voices and talents in a fun, engaging way, including songs, spoken word, debate, podcasts, and film.

This requirement to produce and present ensures their perspectives are not just discussed, but are fully realized and shared with a wider audience, making their input a tangible part of the project’s output and evaluation.
