After spending four years living life as a single woman, I can tell you it definitely has its perks. At least for me, there are perks, such as not having to share my bed, the bathroom, the television, or cook on demand. This doesn’t mean I’m anti-relationship. I’m not. Also, don’t label me a feminist. I’m far from it. I would welcome a relationship. I just refuse to settle.
When you reach a certain point in your life, you know what you want and need. I’m at a stage in my life, where I choose to have quality over quantity and simplicity over complexity. Unfortunately, that viewpoint narrows the dating pool. I understand that being single is not for everyone. We all have this inherent need for companionship, and that need is not lost on me. I’m just able to substitute it by enjoying a fulfilling lifestyle.
Like any skill being single takes practice. There’s a lot of things you must embrace. First, that is accepting and loving who you are. You need to learn how to love yourself before you can love another. Also, you must understand how you, as an individual, fit into a society that is couple oriented and driven. Society is all about the partnership and/or the occasional hookups. It’s the main reason Tinder is so popular. Rather than waiting for the right person to come along you just swipe up. I decided to lick my finger and see which way the wind is blowing, so I can go in the opposite direction. I love roads less traveled.
Here are a few movies that are single-oriented and a treat to watch. Feel free to comment and share your favorite single movie.
How to Be Single (2016)
[su_quote cite=”Alice”]The thing about being single is, you should cherish it. Because, in a week, or a lifetime, of being alone, you may only get one moment. One moment, when you’re not tied up in a relationship with anyone. A parent, a pet, a sibling, a friend. One moment, when you stand on your own. Really, truly single. And then… It’s gone.[/su_quote]
Alice (Dakota Johnson) decides she wants to be single and break up with her long-term boyfriend Josh. Sorry, Josh! With her new found freedom, Alice learns how to pick up men, drink for free, and thoroughly enjoy the single life. Question is did she make the right choice? I believe Alice is a little late to the party. You suppose to explore while you’re attending college because what happens during your college years is quasi-excusable. I’m just saying! Those are your self-discovery years, where you get to experiment. [polite cough]

Gone Girl (2014)
[su_quote cite=”Nick Dunne”]What are you thinking? How are you feeling? What have we done to each other? What will we do?[/su_quote]
This movie will have you peeling back the cover on your relationship if you’re in one. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) suddenly finds himself solo due to his missing wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike). She goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. Their image of the perfect union is shattered and secrets emerge. This movie will have you question the fealty of marriage.

Ghostbusters (2016)
[su_quote cite=”Erin Gilbert”]Why am I operating the untested nuclear laser?[/su_quote]
Not a major hit at the box office but well worth the rental. Paranormal researcher Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) and physicist Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) are on a mission to prove ghosts still exist in modern society. They’re joined by Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) and Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon). This leads to hilarious scenes throughout the movie that rival the original 1984 version.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
[su_quote cite=”Peter Bretter”]I’m trying to. It’s so hard here. Brian, everywhere I look I’m reminded of her, okay? Like, she got me this, okay because I would always leave my cereal boxes open, and the cereal would get stale, and so one day I came home, and she had this waiting for me because it keeps my cereal fresh. And now I have the freshest cereal.[/su_quote]
Everyone is looking for love in all the wrong places. Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) is a struggling musician whose only claim to fame is he’s the boyfriend of television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). She dumps him and Peter finds himself single and ready to mingle. OK, that was bad, but you get the picture. Get it . . . You get the picture? Oh, well! Never mind! Anyway, this movie will have you laughing out loud!

Eat Pray Love 2010
[su_quote cite=”Liz Gilbert”]In the end, I’ve come to believe in something I call “The Physics of the Quest.” A force in nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity. The rule of Quest Physics goes something like this: If you’re brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting, which can be anything from your house to bitter, old resentments, and set out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you.[/su_quote]
Love lost and yearned, acceptance needed, and self-discovery is all packaged and delivered with timeless effort in Eat Pray Love. I’m borrowing from my previous analysis of this film. Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) ends her marriage and soon finds herself on this incredible journey to discover her true passion. This movie will evoke a lot of emotions, so have a box of tissues by your side.
