Memento

Admittedly, I watched this film with reservation because of the storyline. With the #metoo and #timesup movement gaining momentum in 2018, a film about rape is a sensitive topic. Still, I’m a sucker for a good thriller and this is a spoiler-free review!

Leonard (Guy Pearce) suffers from anterograde amnesia, which is an untreatable form of memory loss. When his wife is raped and murdered, he makes it his mission to find the man who did it. Leonard struggles to recall events that occurred because his memory resets every five minutes. He uses Polaroid photographs and tattoos to help him recall things he can’t remember. Memento is shown in a unique way. Director Christopher Nolan used two timelines in a nonlinear approach. He used black and white chronologically and color scenes in reverse order, to show the audience how Leonard views things. Everything gels at the end of the film to complete the narrative, but be prepared for one crazy ride until you reach that point!

MementoThe film is a masterpiece! Nolan does a superb job is presenting a film that is unique and refreshing. Nothing is as it appears. Leonard’s motives are questionable due to his memory loss. He claims he was attacked and the second assailant escaped. The police don’t accept his version of what occurred, which further fuels Leonard’s desire to solve the crime. He relies on his insurance investigator’s skills to conduct the investigation. His elaborate notetaking system allows him to keep track of his progress. There are times when his notes become hazy because of the manipulation of facts.

Leonard comes in contact with several seedy characters, who have their agendas. He doesn’t know who he can trust. There are so many twists and turns to this film. It reminds me of a classic horror film. It is dark and sinister and filled with betrayal, lies, and motives. Memento has such a creepy undertone that you can’t stop watching it. You must see what’s next. Nolan is successful at keeping you on the edge of your sanity. You don’t know what is a truth or a lie.

MementoAs the film progresses and other details are revealed, you will wonder if Leonard is the antagonist.  Nolan should be commended for creating such a fantastic film. He also wrote the screenplay. Memento had a budget of 9 million USD. It earned 39.7 million USD at the box office. Other critics have described this film as disturbing and perplexing and meant for those who genuinely love film. The all-star cast is incredible. Carrie‑Anne Moss (Natalie), Joe Pantoliano (Teddy Gammell), Mark Boone Junior (Burt), and Stephen Tobolowsky (Sammy) delivered and contributed to the film’s success.
