Squad_Leader_TD-73028_Soliloquy_1To be or not to be, that is the question that reverberates during the opening scene, while a  Stormtrooper’s silhouette trespass across a barren landscape. The narrator uses dialog from Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Squad Leader TD-73028 Soliloquy film by Tulp Films. The narration is voiced by Anton Golikov, who does a superb job at inflecting the emotions of the Stormtrooper that is excellently played by cosplayer David Blouin.  It’s near perfection in showcasing the stormtrooper’s mood.

The trooper is lost in a desolate place and is apparently separated from his squad. The trooper appears to be [su_tooltip style=”blue” content=”shocked or confused because of a sudden alarming experience.”]shell-shocked[/su_tooltip] and questioning his position as an Imperial Stormtrooper of The Galatic Empire. The desert landscape is the perfect backdrop of this film. The music is haunting and adds a special ambiance to the scenes. I’m a huge fan of film scores, so I recognize the importance of having a great score to support the film and its sequences. For example, as the trooper comes across what appears to be the remains of a fallen comrade, echoes of dying and remorse resonate with the trooper, while the soliloquy is recited over a melodic piece  . . . “To die. To sleep. Perchance to dream.”

It’s fitting that director Maxime-Claude L’Écuyer has chosen the Shakespearean language to demonstrate the voice of the Stormtrooper.  This is brilliantly done and it offers a different perspective of a Stormtrooper, which has always been suspected—they’re more than the sum of their parts.

The film’s color grading is cleverly done. The cinematography is spot on. The ending, although not a surprise, still manages to be heartfelt. It all leads up to the trooper’s final act of salvation, which begs the question, do stormtroopers have a soul?
