OUTtvGO introduces its brand-new and highly-anticipated comedy Avocado Toast the series. The series follows two millennial friends, Molly and Elle, forced to learn about their parents’ new sexcapades after coming out and a divorce. After a lifetime of dating men, 31-year-old teacher Molly (Heidi Lynch), surprises herself when she falls in love with a woman for the first time. When she finds the courage to come out as bisexual to her suburban parents, they empathetically reveal their own admission – they’re swingers and throw sex parties.  We had the opportunity to talk to Heidi Lynch and  Perrie Voss about the series and what viewers can expect.

Hi Ladies, Thank you for granting the interview. Congratulations on the making of the series. Please tell us more about the plot and what we should expect.

HL: Avocado Toast the series is a heartfelt comedic story about the complexities of female friendships and mother/daughter relationships. The show also explores all of the awkward, funny and touching moments that arise from millennials being forced to talk about sex with their baby boomer parents. Lots of laughs, queer storylines, sexy women over the age of 50, incredible music, so much heart.

PV: Thanks so much! This is a no-holds-barred-female-driven narrative. Audiences can expect the unexpected- if that were even possible. Our show is based on real-life events – but huge events that blew our lives open and ultimately made us stronger and ultimately find who we are. The two protagonists are women who are life-long best friends and who love each other unconditionally, and somewhat co-dependently – but have to deal with very real situations happening in their individual lives. There’s a lot of ridiculous hilarious moments, but it’s all based in truth and some heartbreak.

You both created and star in the series. How did this project start?

HL: We met on a theatre contract. It just happened that right after meeting our personal lives simultaneously exploded. We needed a friend, and we had both just relocated to a small town to do a play and only knew each other. We became each other’s source of support and laughter through hard times. The show is inspired by our real-life events.

PV: Heidi and I met as we were getting ready to do some summer-stalk theatre in Port Dover (a small town on Lake Erie). We had met once before very briefly at a dinner party. I had the ludicrous idea that I thought we should also be roommates while rehearsing this play. I knew I liked her, and for some reason, it felt like a good idea – which was very out of character for me because I tend to need private living space during rehearsals. But I asked her and she agreed and it was a total blessing because we both ended up having some pretty huge life-events happen (which are what ended up being the launching pad for Avocado Toast the series), and we became best friends super quickly. We laughed a lot, we cried a lot and then we laughed more. The play ended up being a hit as well!

Beyond the entertainment factor, how significant would you say this storyline is in today’s society?

PV: I think now more than ever people want to have a connection and share our stories. We want to be seen and heard, especially when we’re going through something heartbreaking or life-changing, we need a community around us. This show is that show. We have two huge events happening to our protagonists, Molly realizing she’s bisexual and Elle’s parents get a divorce because of an affair. The women are in their 30s and it’s not only less common for these events to happen at that time in a person’s life, but it is often viewed as ‘easier’ because we have more perspective as we get older. But that’s just not always the case. So, we create a story and connection around that. It’s deeply relatable on many levels.

Can you share with us your experience of working on the project alongside the cast and crew? Any memorable moments on set?

HL: I can’t sing the praises of our cast/crew loud enough. In this time now (post-production) I am just sitting back and remembering every hurdle and every win and looking at the footage feeling so grateful to everyone who has touched this project (it’s a long list). We shot a one-r! A 3-minute continuous dream sequence take in a Diner. It required so much planning and patience and multitasking on the part of our director, Sam Coyle and the entire team. It was one of those delicious moments where I could feel the excitement and anticipation in the air before each take. My oldest brother came for a set visit that day and he stood in the corner for about 3 hours and watched the same thing over and over again because he didn’t want to miss “the one”.

PV: We had the most incredible cast and crew. Every day I was pinching myself that we got to work with the team that we did. I’m still in awe that we had the talent around us that we did. Everyone worked so hard to bring this vision to life. I really loved being at the cottage with our crew, Heidi and I were the only actors in those scenes, so we had these incredible two days with our crew-family and we played games and had drinks and looked at the stars. It was like going to camp in the middle of a film shoot. I felt incredibly lucky the whole time, but those days were particularly magical.

Do you have anything else in the pipeline we can look forward to?

HL: Well Avocado Toast the series season 2 obviously! Our fellow producer on this project Charlie David is a constant source of incredible queer content creation with his company Border2Border Entertainment (https://www.border2border.ca) and the three of us started a new company (sister company to Border2Border Entertainment called Guts and Gall Productions Inc. You can stay up to date with our next projects by following us on Instagram @gutsandgall

PV: We’re in early stages of development of a couple of different projects with our production company ‘Guts and Gall Productions’ and we’re already talking about plot for Avocado Toast the series season 2! I’m also hoping to be back on set with an incredibly fun network film that got paused during COVID-19 shutdowns. So hopefully later this year we can continue!
