Set in a post-pandemic world, The Pay Day follows a broke and frustrated IT technician played by Kyla Frye, who is charged by a crime boss Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love ) to embark on a one-woman heist to steal valuable data worth millions on the black market.
As if the dangerous pitfalls of her mission weren’t enough, the sting gets more complicated when a charming con artist (Sam Benjamin) interrupts her mission attempting to swipe the loot for himself. The film, penned by Frye and Benjamin, and directed by Sam Bradford, is produced by Praxima and Fryeday Entertainment.
The Pay Day is alluring and begins with much promise, with a likable protagonist who holds your interest, a proven formula, and a successful genre, with a twist. This film doesn’t take itself too seriously, nor should it. However, there’s more style over substance as it tries to emulate previous heist thrillers with the slickness and panache of the Ocean films and the BBC TV series ‘Hustle’ starring Adrian Lester and the late Robert Vaughn. Unfortunately, the weakness of the plot and storyline undermines its attainment. The cast, including Ellen Thomas, Vincent Jerome, and Marcus Onilude, provide proficient support to deliver a film that still is 90 minutes of harmless and watchable light entertainment. The film is now available in the U.S. and will be available in the UK from December 5th on digital platforms by Vertical Entertainment.
