Aderyn - 'Hot Pink!'

Welsh alt-pop songwriter Aderyn, also known as Lisa Martin, is a firecracker presence in the UK indie scene.  Aderyn grew up on a sheep farm in the Brecon Beacons. At 16, she swapped the hills for hi-hats and became the drummer in a grunge band, before stepping forward as a fully fledged alt-pop frontwoman. She now has the backing of the BBC Horizons Project, the PRS Momentum Accelerator Fund and a Welsh Music Prize Triskel Award, making her one to watch.

Her sound blends the energy of a ’90s teen movie soundtrack, riot grrrl grit and alt-pop sparkle. It has won her national support from BBC Radio 1 Future Alternative, BBC 6 Music, Radio X and KEXP. Her critically acclaimed EP Foreverever showcased her witty, sardonic lyricism and melodic punch. Tracks such as “Hangxiety” and “Foreverever” earned plays from BBC 6 Music DJs Amy Lame and Nathan Shepherd.

Aderyn now releases her new EP, Hot Pink!. It is a colourful, chaotic confessional diary of a life-altering breakup, told through four indie pop songs. The record moves like an emotional rollercoaster, and each song explores a different stage of post-relationship grief. They run from wanting reassurance, through bitterness, anger and rumination, to eventual acceptance.

Aderyn says she wanted to make a record that a girl going through a breakup could put on and feel all the feelings alongside her. Hot Pink! follows Foreverever and pushes her diaristic songwriting into new and more experimental territory. It brings swagger, anger, humour and plenty of glitter along the way. Aderyn recorded the EP in West Wales with producer Gethin Pearson. Together they let the songs dictate where the sound would go. The first thing they did in the studio was build a lo-fi electronic drum beat and Casio synth part for “Victorians”. It took them both by surprise, because her music had always been rooted in a live-band sound. Aderyn welcomed the chance to push herself into new territory and explore different genres, without losing the personality of the songs.
