Within Van Elder’s Colombian-set drama lies the skeleton of what could have been a gripping thriller. The ingredients are all there: three friends (Duane Finley, William L. Johnson, and Gerald ‘Slink’ Johnson) lured to the vibrant streets of Medellín under false pretenses, a looming debt to be settled, and a mysterious figure whose true intentions remain concealed. It’s the kind of setup that should keep audiences perched on the edge of their seats.
Yet what could have been a taut exploration of friendship tested by deception instead becomes an exercise in missed opportunities. The film’s glacial pacing suffocates any building tension, while wooden performances drain the life from potentially charged encounters. Scenes that should crackle with suspense instead drift aimlessly, leaving viewers more conscious of time passing than the mounting stakes.
The greatest tragedy here isn’t the predicament facing our protagonists, but rather how a compelling premise gets lost in translation from concept to screen. Medellín itself, a city rich with visual and narrative possibilities, becomes merely a backdrop rather than the character it deserves to be. The central conflict – friends forced to confront an ominous debt collector – should provide fertile ground for exploring themes of loyalty, betrayal, and consequences. Instead, these elements float disconnected, never coalescing into the impactful story they promise.
Van Elder’s direction shows glimpses of what might have been but ultimately fails to weave these threads into a coherent, engaging narrative. The result is a film that feels less like a finished product and more like a rough draft of a much better movie – one where the pacing matches the premise, where performances elevate the material, and where the story’s potential is fully realized rather than merely suggested.
