WordsofAzia is a French-born artist of Ivorian descent whose music seamlessly connects continents, cultures, and generations. Drawing from the traditional Bhété rhythms of her mother’s village in Ivory Coast and enriched with elements of jazz, soul, and spiritual introspection, her debut EP Modern Wihegou stands as a bold, intimate exploration of heritage, identity, and feminine strength.
.
Now splitting her time between Paris, London, and Abidjan, Azia began the project in her mother’s village, where the absence of maternal presence stirred a deep longing to reconnect with her roots. “It was there that I truly started to reflect on how we could weave more of our culture into our music,” she explains. The result is a vibrant soundscape where ancestral wisdom meets contemporary expression—AfroJazz fused with indigenous Bhété chants, soulful storytelling, and the sampled voices of her mother and grandmother interlaced throughout.
.
Modern Wihegou was composed and recorded entirely on Azia’s portable studio, allowing her to capture the essence of her spiritual and geographical journey. Singing in both English and Bhété, she draws from a rich oral tradition where music serves as a vessel for memory and healing. Tracks like “Lagô” (meaning “God” in Bhété), written in Dakar during a period of deep spiritual reflection, highlight how faith and inner alignment shape her creative process.
.
Since 2024, wordsofAzia has released five singles, each accompanied by striking visuals and collectively surpassing a million streams across platforms. Her signature sound is a unique blend of AfroJazz, folk, world, and alternative jazz, infused with poetry, spirituality, and a deep respect for matriarchal heritage.
.
At its heart, Modern Wihegou is about building bridges—between generations, between the sacred and the modern, between identity and expression. Azia’s hope is that her music inspires listeners to “be aligned. To know your history. To be in tune with your identity. And to stay open—to learning about the world, about others, and about the love reflected in their eyes.
