Last Hyena. Occhi Magazine: Showcasing Independent Artists, Creative Projects & Inspiring Stories in Visual Arts, Music, Film, and Literature
Following February’s acclaimed single “Make It Sound French,” Bristol-based instrumental rock trio Last Hyena return with their third studio EP, Suspect Your Elders, landing September 26, 2025. Since forming in 2016, Last Hyena has carved out a signature lane: intricate math-rock rhythms, widescreen post-rock atmospheres, and heavyweight riffs delivered with precision and volatility. Their shows are high-octane, their compositions meticulous—an electrifying three-piece proving, time and again, that sometimes words are surplus to requirements.
.
Suspect Your Elders arrives after the band’s 2021 debut album, How Soon Is Mars?, a critically praised release that paired innovation with emotional pull and earned support from Punktastic, Noizze, At The Barrier, Visions, and Everything Is Noise. The momentum led to festival slots at ArcTanGent, Portals, and PWER, cementing the trio as one of the UK’s most compelling instrumental acts.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Mark Roberts (Delta Sleep, Black Peaks, Poly-Math, Jamie Lenman) at Devon’s Middle Farm Studios, the new EP distills Last Hyena’s strengths—math-rock intricacy, post-rock scope, and a dose of ambient abrasion—into a cohesive set that explores unpredictability, complex emotions, and the darker contours of life online.
.
Ahead of the EP, the band shares its final single, “Surfer”—a tense, kinetic cut that channels the inertia and distortion of endless scrolling into explosive riffs and seductive guitar lines. “Surfer is an analogy for our complex and often overwhelming relationship with social media and the internet in general,” says guitarist Josh. “While the internet is obviously an extremely powerful and useful tool, ‘Surfer’ definitely explores the darker side—the ease with which we can lose ourselves online, hide behind a curated digital persona, or simply waste time.”
If “Surfer” is the warning flare, Suspect Your Elders looks set to be the full-scale signal—an EP that fuses technical agility with thematic bite. For fans of instrumental rock that swings between ferocity and finesse, Last Hyena are leading from the front.
