Matías Roden by Matt Miller -Occhi Magazine: Showcasing Independent Artists, Creative Projects & Inspiring Stories in Visual Arts, Music, Film, and Literature
Occhi Magazine is thrilled to spotlight Matías Roden, a rising star whose journey spans continents and cultures—from the UK to Peru to his current home in Vancouver, BC. With the release of his debut full-length album, The Verdict, Roden delivers a fearless, autobiographical statement that pulses with vulnerability, resilience, and hope.
.
The Verdict is more than just a collection of songs—it’s an odyssey through heartbreak, identity, trauma, and, ultimately, self-acceptance. Roden’s music is a dynamic fusion of synth-pop, worldbeat, and dance-rock, blending introspective lyricism with infectious, anthemic energy. Each track invites listeners to share in his deeply personal journey, all while keeping them moving and inspired.
.
Crafted at Vancouver’s renowned 604 Studios with acclaimed producer Louise Burns (Hotel Mira, Haley Blais), the album showcases Roden’s evolution as a songwriter, performer, and producer. Many of the songs began life as sprawling, 40-track demos—a testament to Roden’s meticulous artistry and commitment to sonic detail. The result is an album that feels both expansive and intimate, layered and immediate.
.
Roden describes The Verdict as “a summation of a quarter life spent in transience, confusion, chaos, moving across oceans and cultures, coming to terms with who I am as a person, and navigating difficult, sometimes traumatic moments in life. The terror and thrill of living life on your own terms and leaping into the unknown.” This spirit of adventure and self-interrogation runs like a current through the album’s emotional arc, tracing a path from darkness and heartbreak through self-exploration, and finally into acceptance and light.
.
Influenced by the big-hearted pop of Bruce Springsteen, George Michael, and Pet Shop Boys, as well as the raw storytelling of Nine Inch Nails, Roden crafts what he calls a “reverse The Downward Spiral”—an album that begins in chaos and ends in clarity. “All of my songs are about the search for meaning and purpose in life,” he shares, “either through romantic relationships, finding a sense of home and belonging, or getting over a traumatic episode. By embracing life as it comes, the dark clouds lift psychologically.”
With The Verdict, Matías Roden has announced himself as a vital new voice—one unafraid to dig deep, to dance through the darkness, and to emerge into the light. For anyone seeking music that is both soul-baring and uplifting, this is an album not to miss.
