Evelyne Berezovsky - Occhi Magazine
London’s World Heart Beat welcomes Evelyne Berezovsky to its south London venue this Saturday, 23 May, presenting an evening with a pianist widely tipped as one of the most compelling artists of her generation. Le Monde has described Berezovsky as a musician with “a huge temperament, dazzling technique and a heart to match,” and it’s that rare combination — fire, finesse, and emotional honesty — that has been drawing audiences toward her with growing intensity.
.
Berezovsky’s career already reads with the scale and momentum of an artist in full ascent. She has performed concertos with ensembles including the Tokyo Mozart Players under Xavier Roth, Musica Viva under Alexander Rudin, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra under Andris Poga, the Thailand Symphony Orchestra, and the Czech Philharmonic under Gudni Emilsson, alongside appearances with the Hulencourt Soloists Chamber Orchestra under Giuseppe Montesano and the Enschede Symphony Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden. Her presence has also been felt across some of the world’s most respected stages — from London’s Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre, to Moscow Philharmonic Hall and Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie — as well as major international festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron, Les Folles Journées du Japon, Fêtes d’Olympia, and Lorin Maazel’s Festival, with regular invitations to Pianos Folies du Touquet.
.
Born in Moscow in 1991, Berezovsky began playing piano at five, and by eleven she was already appearing with orchestra, performing Mozart’s Concerto K415 — an early marker of the musical certainty that continues to define her path. Her training has been shaped by some of the most respected names in classical pedagogy, including Hamish Milne in London, Elisso Virsaladze in Italy, Rena Shereshevskaya in Paris, and, more recently, Maria João Pires in Portugal. In 2019, she was awarded the Grand Prix at the Geörgy Cziffra International Competition in Paris, further cementing her reputation as a pianist of both formidable command and expressive depth.
.
For this south London appearance, Berezovsky brings a programme that moves through colour, atmosphere, and dramatic sweep — from the lyric intimacy of Rachmaninov (Lilacs and Daisies) to the architectural intensity of his Variations on a Theme of Corelli. From there, she turns toward the shimmering light and sensual motion of Debussy in Valse romantique and L’isle joyeuse, before closing with the elegance and underlying volatility of Ravel, performing Valses nobles et sentimentales and the exhilarating, spiralling force of La valse.
