When I scheduled an interview with Philadelphia based model, jewelry maker, seer, and spiritual entrepreneur, Internet sensation Diandra Janelle Rose, I knew I was in for a treat. As I was talking to her, I couldn’t help but to think how much I wish there were more people in the entertainment industry like her; an uplifting soul, who knows that soul advancing and mind expanding art have a place in mainstream media, and strives to give it that place. Being comfortable with herself, she reflects outward and its contagious, and can cause even the shyest one to want to make their own voice heard, and express themselves in the face of adversity.
Diandra’s willingness to embrace herself when very few did, has had her perceived as an awkward young woman who others found difficult categorizing, to unique master piece, who others want a piece of. As a matter of fact, a shot taken of her is on display at The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
No matter if folks are cheering her on, appalled, or just being looky-loos wondering what she’s going to
do or say next, people cannot help but to have their attention on her. Her passion resonates with that of a true creator, whether she’s talking about animal rights, crystal healing work, or discussing the importance of taking action to manifest our desires.
She’s a true innovator, and what I like about innovators is that they can see the formula of what makes the negative things they don’t like popular, and apply it to something that can truly change the world and advance art. As you will hear in the interview, Diandra has that creative eye when it comes to putting out music that inspires one’s spirit. After talking with her I am even more excited to hear her upcoming musical creations.
I didn’t get a chance to ask Diandra how she got the nickname Fairy Thug Mother, or what it means,
but after talking with her, I can see why. Historically, many who have gone against the grain to create justice against a closed off system have been labeled “thugs.” We are in a time now where many desire to define their own spiritual & creative expression on their terms. They do it in a way that courageously stands out, and challenges peoples’ perception. Diandra is one who reflects those creative people.
