Andrew Deevey has never been one to dress things up, and his new single, Money Can’t Buy Me Love, lands with the kind of plainspoken punch that feels tailor-made for the current moment. Lean, hook-laden and built for immediate impact, the track taps straight into the low-level anxiety of belt-tightening Britain, where wages feel fleeting and the cost of simply getting through the week keeps climbing.

An English troubadour with deep roots in the Liverpool scene, Deevey’s path to this solo chapter has been shaped by years of band life, including stints with Decemberists, Hellfire Sermons, The Caretaker Race and The Bitter Springs. Now, stepping forward under his own name, he’s delivering a timely reflection of a credit-crunch era that never quite loosened its grip.

Following his acclaimed Northern Soul album, Deevey’s latest release turns a clear eye toward modern financial pressures, but the message isn’t just about the numbers. At its heart, Money Can’t Buy Me Love is a reminder to value love and real connection over money and material goods — a statement that feels increasingly radical in a world that monetises almost everything.

Musically, the track keeps things raw and minimal, letting an anthemic hook do the heavy lifting. It’s Deevey at his most direct and self-assured, distilling decades of experience into a song that travels well beyond any one postcode.

Money Can’t Buy Me Love reflects on austerity-era realities — the squeeze of the credit crunch, rising costs, having no money and the sense that even when you do earn money, it quickly disappears,” Deevey explains. “It feels like someone is always making money out of you — taxes, parking, fines, bills — it never stops. But the things that really matter can’t be bought.”

That same no-nonsense clarity runs through his approach to performing, too. “I wanted the songs to work acoustically or with a full band,” he says. “I now play live with guitar, harmonica, and drum machine — no waiting around. I’ve been playing these songs and getting good feedback from people. At one festival, someone told me, ‘You just blow them away’… That’s the reaction I’m after.”

Money Can’t Buy Me Love is released via Waterline Records across digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.
