Rob Frank is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer. While his songs are rooted in rock, the artist’s approach to songwriting often incorporates other styles creating something both unique and authentic.   We caught up to discuss his music and his latest release, titled ‘This Place’.

Rob, thank you for agreeing to catch up with Occhi Magazine.  Congratulations on your career to date. For readers who are unfamiliar with you, how did you get into music?

Thanks for having me and for the kind words. I think I got into music because it was always present in my life. Always having it in the background and over time associating songs with memories or events. I think that’s what really laid the foundation for how I got into music. As I got older picking up an instrument just seemed like the natural next step for me.

Who are your biggest influences?

I listen to anything and everything. For me, it’s all about a good song regardless of style. I think my biggest influence is that I like so many artists and bands from different types/styles of music.

In the 2022 Ottawa Awards, you won the “Song Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year” categories. You were also a finalist in the “Artist Of The Year” category. This must be high on the list of your accolades. As an artist, what is your proudest achievement?

I am very grateful for the accolades and recognition moments I’ve experienced and received over time. For me though, my proudest achievement is when someone I don’t know tells me that they connect with something I wrote. As an artist that is what you are hoping to achieve. When someone tells you that you’ve accomplished that, it’s very rewarding.

Your latest project “This Place” is released this week. Please tell us more about its origins and the story behind the track.

I much prefer that the listener decide what the song is about and means to them. It doesn’t matter what inspired me to write it, or what it means to me specifically. What matters is what a song means to the person listening to it. Whatever connection they feel or have with it is what the song should mean.

Please tell us more about its production.

The process of putting the track together and its production was fairly straightforward. Due to covid, it was a lot of doing tracks individually, and then digitally sending them to the next person as required. I started by writing, producing, and recording, the majority of the song parts. Once that was done, it was sent over to Matt. He added on his guitar tracks and then mixed the song. After that was done it got sent to Jon who mastered the tack. There’s more to it than that obviously, but that’s the general rundown.

Alongside the track release, what projects are you currently working on?

There are actually a few different projects in various stages at this time. I’m not exactly sure what order they will be released in just yet. What I do know is if things continue as they currently are, there will be new music sooner than later. I look forward to being able to share that when the time comes.
