Abby Nissenbaum
There’s a particular kind of honesty that doesn’t ask for permission. It arrives mid-thought, mid-feeling the kind that makes you laugh at the ache because it’s so recognisable. On her latest single, “Why Does No One Want Me” (out now), critically acclaimed Nashville-based indie-rock artist Abby Nissenbaum leans into that truth with a warm, open-handed temperament. It’s a song that names the fear without letting it win.
.
Released ahead of a new EP due in June, timed for PRIDE, “Why Does No One Want Me” continues Nissenbaum’s gift for writing straight from the heart. Her work explores depression, isolation, and heartbreak, but it’s never a wallow. Even at its most vulnerable, her songwriting is anchored by messages of hope, empowerment, and community the quiet reminder that you’re not the only one feeling what you’re feeling.
.
Sonically, the track is built on an energetic indie-rock foundation: bright movement, catchy momentum, and melodies that stick around long after the final chorus. That contrast is part of the magic. Nissenbaum’s raw, effortlessly honest vocal delivery gives the lyrics their weight, while the surrounding soundscape keeps the song buoyant like sunlight hitting a bruise. It’s uplifting without being forced, heartfelt without being heavy.
.
What makes “Why Does No One Want Me” land so well is its emotional balance: it can be a confidence anthem and a confession in the same breath. Nissenbaum explains that the track began life as something else entirely, a song she intended to pitch to an artist leaning more toward R&B.
.
“I actually wrote ‘Why Does No One Want Me’ as a confidence anthem to pitch to an artist who leans more toward the R&B end of the music spectrum,” she shares. “The song’s original premise was more aligned with, ‘I’m so great, why wouldn’t anyone want me?’ However, I ended up liking the melody so much that I kept the song for myself (sorry!) and changed up some of the lyrics, most notably the chorus, to reflect my typical ‘sad girl anthem’ vibe. ‘Why Does No One Want Me’ still retains its original sass in the verses and some fun turns of phrase, but the chorus hints at a deeper fear that I think many people my age are feeling: ‘In the age of app swiping and quick validation over real connection, am I destined to be alone forever?’”
.
That tension between sass and sincerity, humour and hurt is exactly what gives the track its pulse. The verses still sparkle with bite, but the chorus opens into something tender and real: a question that so many people carry quietly, now given a melody you can sing back to yourself.

In the lead-up to her June EP, Nissenbaum’s latest release feels like a small act of collective care
